Could TEN launch a brekkie TV show?

A report today claims Lachlan Murdoch has asked TEN executives to develop a third commercial breakfast program.

There is speculation today that TEN may be interested in a news-based breakfast program to compete with Today and Sunrise.

The Australian reports that interim CEO Lachlan Murdoch has asked executives to develop a third commercial breakfast program to run from 6am and 9am, tentatively called AM, to replace its two early news bulletins, at 6am and 9am.

It isn’t clear if such a show would extend to 10am or The Circle could shift to 9am -but a better lead-in could also boost the numbers for the The Circle.

A morning programme could also utilise Andrew Bolt, if he were able to juggle it with his current morning radio commitments on MTR in Melbourne.

If other rumours about Adam Boland joining TEN in the future prove concrete the game could get much more interesting. Boland’s legal case with Seven is yet to be resolved.

TEN previously had a decade-long run with breakfast television with Good Morning Australia, with hosts including Kerri-Anne Kennerley, Gordon Elliott and Tim Webster.

  1. 6 to12 isn’t an overly important time, probably why there is only ‘News and Chat’ during it on main-TV, it doesn’t warrant more, I think TEN should follow suit, I couldn’t imagine the numbers for the kids shows being that high, put the shows over on 11, and let them watch them there. And give the following a go, 6-9 breakfast show…9-11 the circle…11-12 news.
Being the alternative station is all well and good, if it returns results for being so, obviously it doesn’t for TEN in that 6 to12 space. If Sandra Sully and Brad McEwan fronted the show, it may just draw better numbers for TEN than what they are pulling now between 6-12. It’s worth a try.

  2. If it is genuinely different to what is on offer from Today & Sunrise – they I am all for this. Fox & Friends is a great format, likewise Morning Joe on msnbc
But it can’t be too high brow or stuffy.

If it’s Today or Sunrise like it will fail.

  3. The though just came to me… It could be something similar to Fox and Friends on the cable Fox News network.

“TEN And Friends” sounds good but leave The Circle where it is, i think it gives people a chance to see the best hour of The Morning Show and KAK and then switch over at 10am

  4. I have a name for the new Ten Brekkie show.Instead of Fox and Friends it can be called 10 and friends or even Bolt and friends. The format they could use is to just to bash the labor Government for their own\Liberal Party propaganda purposes for 3hrs a day for 7 days a week. It works in the US.

  5. any 1 remember when canwest bought ten in the late eighties and that silly old man they had running the network for a while he was a clown and now theres another clown running the asylum when the circle premiered it had three advertorials per morn now every 15mins enough we dont want another boring breakfast show today repeats everything from 7am till 9 and well sorry but david koch is annoying get rid of him replace mel doyle with nat barr and u might just be on a winner 7 and as for ten they were responsible for introducing the advertorial which is not entertainment it is content filler and i expect programs to entertain me not try and flog me cheap nasty and overpriced crap!

  6. Not a morning news program as such….I like Leigh-Roy’s idea…more .like 7PM Project style…but in the morning….only leave the 9am news and The Circle where they are…..

  7. If they must have a breakfast show the format I like best is that of Morning Joe on MSNBC but Lauchlan wouldn’t do that because it’s MSNBC.

  8. I’ve actually thought about this a fair bit recently, would a show like The 7AM Project work?

Run exactly like The 7pm Project but with more time to focus on stories, interactivity and crosses around Aus.

    It make a fun alternative!

If it were to happen, The Circle should definately move to 9am!

  9. Yea but its not like Toasted TV is getting great ratings… move Toasted TV to Eleven at one point on ONE show the CBS Early Show and TEN bring in a morning show from 6 – 9am and I really think they need to call it GMA Good Morning America if they still have the same name and then run news at 9 and The Circle at 10 I enjoy watching that hour of news before The Circle especially if I slept in and gives The Circle a better chance to pick up viewers when people get sick of watching KAK and the Morning Show!

Plus after watching the Royal Wedding I found Carrie Bickmore and Hamish McDonald really worked well off each other and it was entertaining… put them in it and everything else and I’m sold I’ll turn over and watch that straight away!

  10. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if the show comes under the Good Morning Australia moniker. It’s a well known brand-name which has been successful in two incarnations so why not?

It could work given the right hosts and mix of content.

  11. Oh the horror of switching on TEN and seeing a stupid cash cow.. makes me ill

Oh i remember the time long ago where Cheese TV was the highlight of my day

  12. It does amaze me how network success can be built around a breakfast show considering the the cost and the low ratings they achieve. Ten did it in the 80’s with GMA, and Seven in the 00’s with Sunrise. GMA was axed in the 90’s because of cost, and now they want to invest in something like this when they are trying to cut costs. Interesting times considering so much competition. It would have to be good! They should axe the 6am news and keep late night news!

  13. What happened to the funding cuts at TEN?

Leave the 9am news where it is, I prefer an hour of solid news rather than 3 minute burts every half hour.
