Nine sings its praise for The Voice

Nine's new talent series won't be a cattle-call of wanna-bes, but singers who already demonstrate vocal ability.

Nine has issued a Press Release confirming its local adaptation of Dutch music format The Voice is going into production with Shine Australia and Talpa Productions (Netherlands).

The singing contest has been a hit in the US for NBC after partnering with Mark Burnett. It features a “blind audition” in which the judges cannot see a contestant singing, and has attracted big names judges including Christina Aguilera.

The four judges then go on to mentor the singers, as well as perform regularly in the show themselves.

Jeffrey Browne, Managing Director of Channel Nine, said: “We are very excited to bring this special television event to Australian audiences. The Voice will become must watch entertainment for the whole family.”

Mark Fennessy, CEO of Shine Australia said: “The Voice really is the next step in talent shows that’s got the world buzzing. It’s the real deal.. this show is all about the voice and not the looks”.

John de Mol, creator of the format and Executive Producer of The Voice said: “The Voice is all about real and amazing singing talent. Only the best of the best is good enough to enter our Blind Audition. In the early stage of the show, if more than one coach is interested in an artist, the power shifts and the artist will choose their own star coach. That makes it very exciting. You could say that ‘The Voice of…’ starts where ‘Idol‘ ends.”

Unlike Australian Idol and The X Factor, the show is not expected to hold ‘cattle-call’ style auditions but search for singers who already demonstrate a level of talent, much like Rock Star.

Nine has devoted a significant slice of its production budget to hiring big name judges, including international names.

Although it says the show will be seen “in the coming months”, TV Tonight understands it will be in 2012.

During the blind auditions, if a coach is impressed, he/she pushes a button to select the artist for his/her team of competitors. At this point, the coach’s chair will swivel so that he/she can face the artist he/she has selected. If more than one coach selects the artist, the power shifts to the artist who may choose which coach he/she wants to work with throughout the competition. An artist is eliminated when he/she is not chosen by one of our coaches who are superstar music talents themselves.

Once the teams are set, the battle is on. Coaches will mentor the artists and make them over, and ultimately will transform their superlative voices to allow the singers to become star vocalists. To help them decide who they want to advance, the coaches will pit two of their own team members against each other to sing the same song in front of a studio audience. Based on this, the coaches will pick who they want to continue developing and who should go home.

In the final performance phase of the competition, the top artists from each team will compete against each other during a live broadcast. The television audience, together with the coaches, will vote to select who will move on from each team and who will be eliminated. Artists perform live with their coaches and other famous singers.

At last, each coach will have their best artist left standing to compete in the finale. From these four, one will be named “The Voice of Australia”.

The Voice is modelled on Holland’s top-rated vocal talent discovery show, “The Voice of Holland.” The Voice US is hosted by Carson Daly, and features four musician coaches – Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, who select and coach only the most talented vocalists.

  1. the main thing i liked about The Voice U.S. is that they picked all current artists it brings more interest to the show.
    they should be
    Pete Murray – new age
    Vanessa Amorosi – diva
    Keith Urban – youth country
Cee Lo Green – !!bam!! factor
    please not kylie minogue

  2. One should look at David Campbell as either a host or judge/mentor. He is the cons umate performer and crosses all genres and has great music credibility.

  3. This sounds extremely exciting! I hope at least one of these people (Tina Arena, John Farnham, Darryn Hayes and Vanessa Amorosi) are the judges on The Voice Australia

  4. I bet they’ll find a way to ring Delta Goodrem into being a judge/mentor… Then find 2 B-list (once A-list) international stars, and obviously…

John Farnham (The Voice… duh…anndddd cue theme song)

I think it’d be interesting to see Vanessa Amorosi as a coach too 🙂

  5. I’m pretty sure that when they said that the show will be seen in the coming months, it means the U.S. version. It’ll probably kick off in September to go with the new slew of shows from the U.S. and wrap just before the end of ratings season- with the Australian version to start April/May2012.

  6. maybe one of the big names will be Lady Gaga? They are doing “A Gaga Affair” at 6.30pm Monday. Could be the perfect time to announce it!

  7. I’ve heard that Nine is spending $25 million on this series and also that they are trying to poach Cee Lo Green, so this is looking extremely promising.
    Definately tuning in.

  8. I know it is very unlikely but I would love to see Pink as one of the judges on the show as well as possibly Delta Goodram. As for two males I’ve got no idea who they could pick. Does anyone have any idea of who the judges might possibly be?

  9. It all comes down to the judges for me. I went to the x factor tapings a few months ago and Mel and Nat B are excellent. I think it will be hard for the voice to top x factor in that field. Perhaps pick up Natalie imbruliga.

Outside of that the format is exactly the same as X factor. The blind auditions are a pointless gimmick, and probably an insult to the judges professionalism.

  10. I really do hope they leave this to 2012.. the X Factor really deserves a chance to shine with it’s new season. The prodcution values are a step above on the X Factor, Mel B should prove to be an interesting addition to the judges panel.

Will be very interesting to see who these ‘big names’ are that 9 is chasing..

  11. this is no different than the X factor except for the blind auditions. After that it’s the whole team thing, mentors and eliminations and eventual-failed record deals.

I give it 1 season before Nine probably cancel it D:
