TEN to revive Young Talent Time ….and even It’s a Knockout?

Speculation is rife ahead of next week's 2012 Programming Launch that some old faves are coming back.

Speculation is rife ahead of next week’s 2012 Programming Launch that some old faves are coming back.

Legendary media buyer Harold Mitchell has written in the The Age:

“But now the electricity is firing through the Ten Network with some big announcements scheduled for next week. The management will make it clear to the advertising market that they are back to high-level targeting, which is a great way to convince advertisers to pour money back into the station.”

“Rumour is that Ten is going to come out with a spectacular breakfast program.

“Other program speculations are for a Grundy version of It’s A Knockout plus a bikie wars series from the Underbelly mob. So it looks like Ten is going to have a bit more muscle and could well be a serious force again.”

TEN has already confirmed The Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms a long time ago.

Sarah Murdoch, wife of interim CEO Lachlan Murdoch, is tipped to be a presenter if a breakfast show goes ahead. Murdoch was considered a success when she co-hosted the Today show prior to Lisa Wilkinson.

Meanwhile the Herald Sun speculates that TEN may revive Young Talent Time:

“It is understood the show — which produced some of Australia’s brightest stars, including Tina Arena, Debra Byrne and sisters Kylie and Dannii Minogue — will be back on Network Ten, which screened the original.

“A Ten spokesperson declined to comment yesterday, but it is believed an announcement on the new YTT will be made as early as next week.”

  1. It’s a Knockout & YTT?! Really?! My christmas has come early!!!

Attention network TEN – if Grundy’s is going to produce the new version of IAKO, then a negotiation for re-broadcast of archival episodes from the 1980s should definitely be given some serious consideration for Eleven. Foxtel over the past decade have re-broadcast classic Young Talent Time episodes, even Blankety Blanks (a grundy production) There is definitely a market for Australian classic Television, it’s an untapped goldmine for the networks. Sadly the copyright laws regarding our own moving history are out of date and too restrictive, meaning it’s easier to re-run Australian Television in Europe than it is in the country of origin.

  2. Harold Mitchell and Erroll Simper both have the same problem. What is hilarious in their heads is more times than not an incomprehensible ramble.

  3. Ah, the annual “YTT and Knockout revival” rumours… 🙂

Though i think Mr Mitchell is being rather ambitious to think that an ’80s revival and one mini-series is going to help Ten get out of its post-MC dilemma. He must be aware of more than he is letting on, and I guess we won’t know till next week.

Interesting that Mr Mitchell in his article mentions Number 96. Now that’s a show that should be revived… the actual apartment building is still there… and Ten needs a lot more drama to meet its obligations.

  4. btw I agree with the renovators. awful way to launch a show. some days it was on 8.30, 8:00 or even 9:00 following MC. How are you meant to watch it. they just should of started the MC finale at 6:30 – 8.30 and launched it 8.30 sunday like Undercover Boss last year. I guess everyone is a programmer in hidsight but i recon my cat could of worked that out. it would only have 2 take on 2 weeks of the block and might of had a chance to pick up some of its veiwers after that

  5. What’s next – The Price is Right and Adult Double Dare (was that what it was called?) – sounds like Ten are looking at their 1989 programming and how they got through a bad time back then…

Speaking of 89, a well-done Comedy Company revival could do well – as long as it doesn’t get stupid like most recent attempts at skit based shows.

  6. Please bring back Young Talent Time. I only started watching Young Talent Time when I was 6 and then it got cancelled in the late 1980’s. I would even love to see the old episodes as well on Channel Eleven. Youtube is my friend but it only have a handful of old Young Talent Time episode.

  7. Hi Dave, you’ve probably already been told this but the Herald Sun link isn’t working and I cannot find the story 🙁 but otherwise this is exciting! Between those two and Good News Week, all my favourite shows would be back on the air! Although I admit to secretly loving “Main Event” with Aggro when that was on back in the day and Double Dare lol 😛

  8. If either are brought back, one could go on sat to cover the loss of the AFL. I really hope if YTT is revieved that it gets a big scale production. I’m 2 young to remember this show the 1st time round, but i heard it was very good

  9. YTT will succeed: if brought back in the format that it was in 87/88 (themed shows, outside specials, occasional live concerts, along with the talent search). Unlike Hey Hey, YTT can fit in a 20, maybe 40 episode season, as long as the former home of YTT (Global Studios Nunawading) is available.

If anything, having YTT there, will likely be beneficial for AGT (i.e encourage more kids), not a detriment.

The other thing will be that it needs to be in the traditional YTT slot: Saturday 6:30 straight off the bat, as Ten has no AFL after year’s end.

  10. Oh I Loved YTT when I was younger, I don’t think anyone could have that same Johnny Young magic, though.
I reckon the Circle as is would be a great alternative for a brekky show for people who don’t want too much news etc first thing in the morning.

  11. Let’s hope they know how to program any of these new shows properly – and not schedule shows so they “die”. Their programming of The Renovators has to go down as the worst scheduling decision of Any major new local program launch in 2011. And that is such as shame as it has great production values, a top notch presenter (who doesn’t shout and wildly throw his arms around) plus a solid team of judges, including the “find of the year” Robyn Holt…how watchable is she!

  12. Stop jumping on the Glee bandwagon & please leave Young Talent Time alone, that said i would love It’s A Knockout to come back but wouldn’t that be kind of expensive given that 9 had to go to Argentina for the modern day equivalent Wipeout.

  13. None of these ideas sound that good IMO

A new breakfast show – yeah, probably just as “groundbreaking” as 9am with Kim and David was. i.e. generic, bland, rubbish, constantly third in its slot.

Young Talent time revival – probably trying to piggyback off the success of AGT

I’m all for Ten picking up ground next year as I (generally) like them as a network, but these ideas sound rather rubbish, and not innovative in the slightest.
