Modern Family writer Steve Levitan said, “Last season we were on location and a gay couple came up to us and said, ‘You know you’re not just making people laugh, you’re making them more tolerant.’ And I thought to myself ‘They’re right. We are showing the world that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a loving relationship between an old man and a hot young woman.

“And looking around this room tonight I see many of you agree. Thankyou all very, very much.”

Thankyou and goodnight.

  1. I find every single one of the comedy winners pretty farcical. McCarthy is the worst in her category by a mile, how Parsons beat Steve Carell is beyond me, and Modern Family is one the most dull, unfunny sitcoms currently going. Then again, the comedy categories were bit-pear shaped from the moment nominations were announced and Community, It’s Always Sunny and Ron Freaking Swanson were ignored.

The rest of the night was a mix of “pretty much spot on” and some genuine – and mostly pleasant – surprises. I’ve never seen Kyle Chandler in Friday Night Lights, but every critic in the land has been singing his praises for years so it is good to see him take the title home in one of Bryan Cranston’s off years.

A bit bored of Mad Men winning every year though, as good as it is.

  2. Andrew_81 – the actors decide which category they want to be entered in and there are guidelines that need to be followed. While you correctly remembered that initially, all of the “Friends” cast were considered Supporting Actors (Lisa Kudrow earned an Emmy in this category and all but Courtney Cox received nominations at some stage), you’ve forgotten that for the last three years of the series’ run (2002-2004), all six actors chose to enter themselves in the Lead Actor category. Jennifer Aniston, Matt Le Blanc and Matthew Perry all scored nominations that first year (Jennifer won), indicating that the Academy were more than happy to accept that they were all Lead Actors. Jennifer and Matt Le Blanc continued to earn Lead Actor nominations until the series ended in 2004.

  3. I watched the emmy awards last night and loved it:)

i thought sofia vergara was going to win although Julie Bowen Deserved it.
I was so suprised to discover Melissa Mccarthy won. Her portrayal was not even aknowledged by critics. interesting and suprising. good for her.

  4. I really was sure that Laura Linney would win, had predicted it for months! As comedy and its forms are changing, the Emmy’s seem to have slipped back to the traditional multicamera comedy with audience and laugh track in some of the major categories. Toni Collette (whose work i love) was rewarded, followed by last year’s Edie Falco. Even Falco herself admitted in her acceptance speech that she is not funny, and i maintain that United states of Tara is no comedy. The Big C, while has amusing moments, is, even with the luminous Laura, taking comedy into new areas, and the Academy is still filled with people from Lucy and Mary Tyler Moore’s vintage with the traditional sitcom style – and Jim Parsons and Melissa McCarthy’s work fits that tradition very well. Thank God (or Steven Levtian) for Modern Family – crisp, funny, touching, lots of characters and no laugh track. Next year Ed O’Neill and Sofia Vergara will win. They love to share the Emmy love around. If one looks at the drama series as well, the narrative forms are shifting, but evidently some voters still catching up. Loved Margo Martindale’s speech reminded me of Holland Taylor and Camyrn Manheim’s speeches several years ago.
