Nine: 2012 highlights

Olympics, The Voice, Big Brother, Underbelly, The Block, Celebrity Apprentice, Tricky Business and Excess Baggage are all coming to Nine in 2012.

The Nine Network has announced its highlights for 2012, led by the Olympic Games and a string of Reality titles designed to underpin its early evening programming.

At its 2012 Programming Launch today, hosts Hamish and Andy were joined by Nine boss David Gyngell, singer Delta Goodrem, Director of Sales Peter Wiltshire and Nine Entertainment Co. execs.

Nine celebs joined with execs, advertisers and media at a Christmas lunch at Carriageworks in Everleigh. Delta Goodrem also performed a medley of her hits.

Confirmed as judges for The Voice are previously leaked profile names including Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden, country star Keith Urban, soul singer Seal and pop star Delta Goodrem. A host is tipped to be announced shortly.

Sonia Kruger, who was unable to attend due to her contractual obligations with Seven, will host Big Brother: Secrets. Pitched as “new house, new housemates, new twists, new host” it will launch on the back of the Olympics. No location has yet been confirmed.

The Block returns, including with a new elimination round, as does Celebrity Apprentice.

Celebrity weight loss show Excess Baggage contestants were confirmed: Kevin Federline, Christine Anu, Kate DeAraugo, Gaby Millgate, Darryn Lyons, Brant Webb, Ajay Rochester and Robert “Dipper” DiPierdomenico. Each is paired with a non-celebrity with challenges on location around Australia including the Kimberleys and Hamilton Island. Kate Ceberano hosts.

New drama series Tricky Business stars Shane Bourne, Gigi Edgley, Debra Byrne, Lincoln Lewis, Kip Gamblin, Antony Starr and Sophie Hensser. The Screentime drama revolves around a family who run a debt-collecting business in Wollongong. The focus of the series is on the family relationships but there are some procedural elements.

There are three new telemovies / miniseries including Howzat! The Kerry Packer Story (which undergoes a title change), Beaconsfield and The Great Mint Swindle starring Grant Bowler, Todd Lasance, Josh Quong Tart, Shane Bourne and John Batchelor.

Underbelly will return but Nine did not disclose its setting.

International highlights include Top Gear, Earth Flight, The Mentalist, CSI, Sherlock, Sinbad, Parade’s End, Alcatraz, Two Broke Girls and the BBC-produced The Great Barrier Reef.

Olympics notwithstanding, much of Nine’s focus was on stripping profile shows at 7pm, including Excess Baggage as well as branded opportunities in multiplatforms including digital.

Nine is also stepping up its use of social media.

Howzat! – the Kerry Packer Story: From the makers of Paper Giants, a major mini-series on the birth of World Series Cricket and how the face of Cricket changed on Australian televison due to the legendary Kerry Packer. Guaranteed to be the must-watch television event of 2012.

Beaconsfield: Shane Jacobson and Lachy Hulme head an outstanding cast in the three-hour telemovie which tells the story of the amazing rescue of Todd Russell and Brant Webb from the collapsed Beaconsfield mine in Tasmania five years ago.   1. David, can you answer me this… why would a network bother with expensive event television such as the Olympics etc when they do not feature in ratings periods? Is it for the exposure it gives their other content and talent etc? It seems like a lot of money for something that isn’t factored in with regards to ratings and in turn advertising…

  2. “The Home of Laughter” – bit of a stretch when there are only four shows listed and only one is new. Would be more accurate to call it the Home of 2½ and TBBT Over and Over Again.

    “The Home of the most watched and respected News and Current Affairs” – none of that is true.

    “The Home of Sport” – is missing the word “delayed”.

    The only things I’m interested in are Alcatraz and Howzat!

  4. This schedule looks terrible. Big Brother and the Apprentice are outdated and boring, but seeing as crap like The Block rates so highly I’m sure these series will as well.

    Go’s looks dodgy as well – no matter what they announce it’ll be bumped for BBT and Top Gear repeats

  6. Just saw the promo for 2012 on nine again after ACA…. The typo has been fixed…. But “secrets” has also been removed from the big brother title too…. And in the press release there is no mention of it….. Was that announced before it was supposed to be?

  7. Yeah yeah yeah every year is the same the promise of some good shows that never eventuate and treating existing shows like crap, same old nine network,we’ll still have the same gripes next year as we do this year

    so how is 3.25% of the population watching a show, a *Smash Hit*?

  9. No way will I be watching Nine’s coverage of the Olympics. Foxtel have like 10 dedicated channels all in HD. The only thing that excites me about this is Big Brother, and I don’t even like it much.

  13. Will not be watching Nein’s Olympic Coverage. Any word they’ll broadcast in HD for those who choose not to pay extra or do not have Foxtel? Thank goodness for Foxtel’s Olympic Coverage and after I heard Vancouver’s was excellent, Foxtel will have the best coverage for the London games next year.

  17. I’m interested in 4 things:

    Big Brother, Celebrity Apprentice, Underbelly and The Block – the rest of their offerings do not interest me. I will say though its a huge improvement – a few years ago I was only interested in Comedy Inc and Underbelly. For me 9 was always been the network I watch the least. 2012 looks like that will change.

    David has TEN, ABC, SBS, 7 had their press announcement events for 2012 yet? If so can you link this article with them – I can’t find them via the search function. I want to know the highlights from each network for 2012.

  24. As always I only believe about 1% of what Nine says, weren’t they promoting Two Broke Girls as coming soon back in September? Top Gear, well we know the next season starts with a Christmas special and the rest of the season starts in January, guess we’ll see them in Feb. And what happened to the sitcoms they promised for 2011 but still are yet to deliver? And I see no mention of the Emmy winning Mike & Molly. Looks like 90% of their comedy will come from 2.5 Men and TBBT.
