CBS has renewed Survivor for its 25th and 26th seasons, taking the show into 2012-13.

Jeff Probst will remain as host.

It is the show that manages to keep re-inventing itself with twists, format changes and casting masterstrokes. In the US, Survivor: South Pacific is averaging 12.3 million viewers and is the No. 2 reality series among adults 18-49.

Survivor is an outstanding franchise,” said CBS exec Jennifer Bresnan. “Its format guarantees fresh characters, exotic places and fascinating social dynamics every season. And, the show is backed by an A-plus production team that is as passionate as the die hard Survivor fans. All of us at CBS are incredibly proud of Survivor‘s ongoing success.”

In Australia a loyal band of followers has also seen the show retain a place on Nine’s primary channel.

The next season begins in the US on February 24th.

  1. I would like to thank the survivor show on behalf of my daughter Emily who was lost in dense bushland/rainforest in Springbrook recently said she used alot of information she learnt from the show to help with her survival.
    A big thank you

  2. Such great news, survivor is one of my favourite tv shows. I’m not a huge reality tv fan but I enjoy survivor and I like redemption island (seems like I’m the only one). I’ve watched all of the seasons except the 1st one but to be honest I can even remember many after Africa. I can’t wait to see what they come up with.

  3. I haven’t seen this since the first season or two, but I think it’s interesting that the show which seemed to define the “Reality TV” genre is still around, and going strong. Meanwhile other shows just try to go one-up with twists, double twists, controversy for self-promotion, and fake evictions.

Season 26 does sound strange for a show only running for 10 years.
This shows that it can maintain some freshness airing at least twice a year.

I can’t say I’ll be watching again, but all the best to the show and its allied viewership.

  4. Great news! This season has been a bit of a return to form after two weaker seasons before it, so hopefully the upward trend continues.

@roaringdave: apparently this is the last we’ll see of Redemption Island for a while at least. Can’t say I’ll miss it.

  5. Very good news. Also agree that redemption – while a good way to keep interesting players in the game – means we miss out on the classic moment when someone is blindsided, and bitter as hell. Instead, it’s a slow exit, without the sizzle.

  6. Ha, Jas – you speak the truth! It’s started to feel a bit like a Christian Broadcasting message in the last few seasons. I’m pretty sure God has better things to do than worry about which team is going to win an immunity challenge!

  7. Fantastic news. Although if they keep stacking teams with people who pray in a circle all day I might consider turning it off. It gets a bit ridiculous sometimes.
