My Top 5 for 2011

So what were my personal top picks for 2011? Here's my Top 5.

Last week I asked a string of TV critics from around the country to list their best and worst of 2011 TV for my annual Critics’ Choice Awards.

This morning on ABC Radio National’s Breakfast with Fran Kelly, I finally got to reveal my own favourites.

With so much on offer it was a very hard decision, and I anguished over some omissions.

But here are my Top 5 for the year:

5. Downton Abbey, Seven.

4. Game of Thrones, Showcase.

3. Cloudstreet, Showcase

2. The Slap, ABC1.

1. Go Back to Where You Came From, SBS ONE (and yes it is repeated from tonight at 8:30pm).

I will soon be opening voting for the annual TV Tonight Awards -your chance to choose, the best, the worst, the stars and the stories of the year in television.

  1. Great choices David. Personally, as much as I thought Cloudstreet was brilliantly directed and acted, it did seem a bit long and drawn out for my liking. But then again I thought the same of the book so that’s just me!

Where is Kyle & Jackie O’s “A Night With The Stars”?

  2. I loved Swift and Shift and Housos is very funny too! I think Paul Fenech is very talented, though underrated.
For me the most disappointing series was Angry Boys. Promised so much and although it offered the occasional laugh most the episodes were average at best.

  3. My top 5 in no particular order would be.

    Australian
    1. Offspring
    2. TwentySomething
    3. Laid
    4. Rush
    5. The Slap

    International

    1. Dexter
    2. The Walking Dead
    3. Entourage
    4. Parks and Recreation
    5. Modern Family

  4. @Kenny – every time you comment you seem to quote Gillard saying “don’t write crap, can’t be too hard”! (At least I think it’s you.) In fact, good writing is actually quite difficult – much harder than quoting someone else’s catch-phrase over and over…

  5. I think my stand outs this year were Paper Giants The Birth Of Cleo, Offspring (no I’m not an Asher Keddie fan), Go Back To Where You Came From, Modern Family (once Ten got around to showing series 2 in full!) and Spicks And Specks for its final year.

  6. I think I abandoned The Slap after the third gratuitous masturbation scene.
@Joni “Not a comedy among em! “- Nothing new these days that can qualify as a genuine “comedy”. As someone said “Don’t write crap, can’t be too hard”. But they do.

  7. Thanks David. It is a hard choice to do a top 5. Looking forward to the voting of tv tonight awards. Excellent website again. Best tv information site for 2011!!
