A new coat of paint is coming…

Psst! The new-look TV Tonight is just coming, as soon as the paint is dry.

Ok guys, version 3.0 of TV Tonight is imminent -just in time for the ratings year.

It’s been just over 3 years since the site was refreshed, so it’s time to add a few extra features.

All the things you are familiar with will remain: News, Programming, Pay TV, Reviews, Ratings etc. Your feedback during the recent TV Tonight Awards has assisted in this.

I’m very aware that we are often reluctant to embrace change so I have sought to update without going overboard.

The new site will also require you to register an ID with a valid email in order to participate in Comments. I believe this will help lift the tone of online discussions. It goes without saying that your email address remains private. Your cookies should remember you so that you don’t have to keep logging in.

There are bound to be a few hiccups in the transition, so the site will soft-launch in Beta mode.

And lastly, right across next week I am publishing the third annual Programmers’ Wrap -a series of major interviews with Programmers from all the networks. These will be extensive articles, chockful of news and insights about the year ahead.

TV Tonight remains the only platform in Australia -in any medium- that offers these back to back interviews with the people in charge of our schedules. They have a lot to say and there are scoops that have not been revealed elsewhere and plenty of hints too.

By the time everything is unwrapped I trust you will continue to value the site and our shared passion for all things telly.

Cheers, David

  1. The only thing i would want to change is the comments section. I’d rather you went back to how it used to be with older comments at the top and goes down to newer comments near the comments box. Much easier to scroll down a page reading comments, and makes sense to have the newer comments at the comments box cos they’re the ones most people will be commenting on.

Other than that, not much needs to change

  2. @Allie – would you pls rewrite that last comment as I couldn’t quite get what you were saying. 😉

@Trix – it’s prob a bit late to be lobbying for changes but I agree that being able to see the number of comments on the main page would allow us to note the popular topics. Would also be nice if topics with new comments since last viewed were tagged in some way.

  3. Hi David, Like everyone on this page I’m looking forward to the “refresh”… A pet peeve that has developed for me is “the Like Button” please don’t add it to this site!
Just by coming here and putting TV Tonight in to my fav menu means that I like it..
Enjoy the rest of the weekend. D

  4. My only wish for the new site is a favicon so I can easily see your site in my tabs and bookmarks. A little 16×16 image makes all the difference these days. An Apple Touch icon would be nice too for the iPhone homescreen.
Can’t wait to see the changes.

  5. Ah, I love a good makeover. Thanks again for your hard work, David, and look forward to seeing what you have in store. As far as 2012 colours go, anything bold and dramatic is very fashion forward at the mo!

My two cents would see a comments number total on the heading or icon of each story, just like you have on the site’s mobile versions. I find that often leads me to reading stories I might not otherwise, based not the fact that lots of others have and deemed it important enough to comment on.

  6. i love the way some people are whinging about having to log in. Whats the big deal you fools?? You have access to a Free great informative website here and all you can do is whine about having to register??? Get a life. Keep up the great work David.

  7. @morgan- LMAO!! Good one!

Agree re having a Paypal donation option and also agree that an edit post option would be great. I often re-read my posts after they’ve gone up and cringe at the poor way I’ve expressed a thought. Being able to edit would be cool!!

  8. Sounds interesting thanks for all your hard work David where do you get the time to eat and sleep as for registering an ID I think it is a great idea am am happy to registar

  9. Look forward to it David, and happy to here we’ll still sign in to the sight directly rather than have to log-in through a third party like Facebook or Twitter which so many sites seem to force upon you now without the option to comment directly.

  10. @Gilly and A – You comment that you present ‘Witty remarks / profound comments / passion etc… ”

Well… If you still wish to continue with those ‘valued’ comments then make sure you sign up with a valid ID… If you don’t then many of us will ………..

And Joe, you class not being able to edit comments a ‘major problem’… I would have thought it would have been a ‘nice to have’ rather than Major…

@Craig – comments will never be posted automatically…

  11. Since it makes the site look like something from the 90s, a major problem that needs to be fixed, is the ability to be able to edit a comment you’ve made, if in case you made a spelling or grammar error that you want to fix.

  12. It’s nice to see that the ID system is finally eventuating. I think the main reason David is introducing it is to ward off the Ready Steady Cook commenters… 🙂

  13. As Big Kev used to say, “I’m excited!”

@A, I’m curious as to how you’ve been able to comment on this site without an e-mail address. Whenever I post anything, an e-mail address is required. Is there currently a way around this that I am not aware of?

  14. I a believer in ‘if it ain’t broke…’ too.
A change of colours ok, but I hope it won’t bog down with heavy flash and scripts etc! and all that sort of crap!

  15. OK what am I missing? If ‘A’ never uses email, how is it possible to make comments with the site as it is now? I thought providing an email address was a mandatory field?

Chris re: “It’ll probably just result in people not commenting at all, and that would be a shame”. If people have a valid email address and love coming to this website then they will take the time to register. If they don’t then they are most probably ‘the 21yo blonde bombshell in California, or an unemployed coalminer in Wales or one of many others that are “one-offs” ‘….

Making it mandatory to register an ID (with a valid email address) to comment regularly is a great way of removing those that are too afraid and/or are hiding something. I am all for the changes, and am really looking forward to them.

    Cannot wait….
