US actress Paget Brewster will leave Criminal Minds at the end of the seventh season.

Brewster plays Special Agent Emily Prentiss in the CBS crime procedural.

“After six wonderful years playing Emily Prentiss, I have decided it’s time for me to move on,” she said in a statement. “As much as I will miss my Criminal Minds family, I am excited about the future and other opportunities.”

Last year, she took time out to shoot NBC’s comedy pilot My Life as an Experiment but after the the project didn’t go to series she was able to return to Criminal Minds.

Deadline reports she wanted to do another half-hour pilot again this year but didn’t get the blessing of CBS and ABC Studios, so Brewster has opted to leave.

“We were all sad to hear the news, but we respect and support any decision Paget wants to make,” the series’ executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer said. “Personally, I’m a huge fan and will continue to be one wherever she goes.”

Co-star Thomas Gibson said, “We all love Paget and her character and will miss her greatly but I know that she will have continued great success.”

  1. Just when I was so pumped for Prentiss to come back in season 7 and this happens! I am devastated, she is definitely one of my favourites (partly due to her small recurring role on Friends back in the early seasons, haha).

  2. It’s a shame, she is a really good character. I’ve also read various forums which want to see Hotch and Prentiss get together eventually. It doesnt bother me if they become a couple or not, just a shame she is leaving. Hopefully they can bring in a strong female character to replace her.
