TEN relents on Formula One for Adelaide & Perth

TEN has buckled to pressure from Formula One fans and will now screen coverage on ONE in Adelaide and Perth.

TEN has buckled to pressure from Formula One fans and will now screen coverage on ONE in Adelaide and Perth when it airs on TEN on the East Coast.

It follows a backlash from fans angry that the motorsports has been delayed in those cities since it switched from ONE to TEN.

The network will continue to screen Formula One on TEN in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane at 9:30pm on Sundays. In Adelaide and Perth an NCIS repeat will play on TEN.

Fans have also criticised TEN over the loss of HD coverage.

In a statement TEN said, “Network Ten is committed to bringing Formula One and MotoGP to more viewers and building motorsport’s television presence in Australia.

“This was achieved successfully on Sunday night (April 22), when running Round 4 – Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix on TEN produced a 46% increase in viewers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane compared with the same round last year.

“As a result, Network Ten’s broadcast of Formula One and MotoGP will remain live on TEN in the Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane markets.

“But we recognise that viewers in Adelaide and Perth want live sport. We acknowledge the concerns expressed by some viewers in those cities about the delayed telecast of Sunday night’s race.

“Network Ten has, therefore, decided to broadcast Formula One and MotoGP in Adelaide and Perth live on ONE. Viewers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane will continue to receive the broadcast live on TEN.”

“In addition, we will live stream the broadcast on www.tensport.com.au in all markets.”

  1. @JoshS – they can’t really compare this year with last, much has changed and rounds are on different weeks. But you can compare this week with last week and we all know TEN was down this Sunday some 1.9% market share.

Maybe they have realized their ‘Super Sunday’ is not working?

  2. @JoshS – haha pwned! I couldn’t be bothered to see if their maths was bogus as they weren’t comparing the same things. Just more BS from the Spin Network.

“Feel free to return the love…”
Already voted for you four times. Good luck!

  3. Sorry Ten, I think your math may be off. Assuming you are comparing with Round 4 of last year (which was not Bahrain but Turkey on 8 May) and using http://tvtonight.com.au/2011/05/week-20-3.html for the values from OzTAM, there was 320,000 viewers on ONE and 121,000 on Ten. Total is 441,000.

You got 425000 according to OzTAM figures posted here http://tvtonight.com.au/2012/04/sunday-22-april-2012.html .

Also on network share ONE got 5.1% on 8 May 2011 and 1.6% this past Sunday. Ten got 17.3% last year 8 May and 13.1% past Sunday.

Network share total 8 May 2011 25.4% and past Sunday was 16.2%. Thus I fail to see where you get your 46% improvement from. I would love to know though as these ozTAM figures don’t appear to match your stats

  4. Recording the F1 on my Foxtel iqHD so that I can fast-forward through the ads!! Thanks for listening to our fans and the NBL Game 3 was done professionally.

  5. Great news – thanks Ten for listening to your viewers, although if the broadcast is in full HD then I can understand our friends in the east will still have cause for complaint. Thanks David for giving us all a voice to vent our concerns!!

  6. Even though I wasn’t affected as I live in Sydney, good move from Ten, I’m glad that they’ve listened to the fans!

I’m still not convinced this is the best option for them though, surely a NCIS repeat in all markets would get about the same as F1 would get, and they’d get a multichannel boost.

Also, David, nice to see a 2000 F1 car on the blog, it’s not something I see every day!

  7. David your choice of photo is a little old….. 2001 i think….. but then again thats the decade Ten/One think we are in. Might go buy a 34cm TV on the weekend….all ready for the next race 😉

Come on guys seriously bring back the HD coverage….. Its not really a hard thing to do…. Who is really going to watch a B-Grade movie on One anyway….. Just simulcast the F1 & MotoGP…. Put ya tail between ya legs and admit you were wrong.

  8. This just proves for years all 3 commercial networks have shown contempt for Adelaide and Perth viewers we are always missing out we should get the same live coverage as the east coast

  9. Common sense wins again (eventually).

David K, I know you’re prob a little wary of your blog being occasionally over-run by sport-related comments (F1/NRL/AFL) but it’s great that you’ve taken a lead and run these stories as they’ve broken. Your article url’s were posted and reposted around the blogosphere, twitterverse, and facebook,,, er, planet, so I think that you can take a bow for the small part that you played.

The sad thing is that those responsible for the decision would already have been aware “… that viewers in Adelaide and Perth want live sport.” They presumably just didn’t care and thought that any negative effect would be minimal and short-term. The might have gotten away with it if they hadn’t stiffed the eastern states of HD coverage at the same time.

Lastly, as William has hinted, the claim of a 46% increase over the same round last year is not a valid comparison because Round 4 in 2011 was in May and took place in Turkey, plus digital take-up is greater than 12 months ago.

    But I am happy. [smileyface]

  10. Thank you Ten. Finally a broadcaster listens to its audience. 7 & 9 wake up and smell the decay of a deteriating audience. One that finds other means of viewing the shows you are not broadcasting and the shows you should be broadcasting at a reasonable hour and at the time stated.

  11. That new 80% opaque TEN watermark is hideous and distracting, not to mention the screen-burn it can cause on a LCD. They went from 30% to 80% opacity a few weeks ago. Yet ONE and ELEVEN remain at 30% opacity. Complete morons running that network!

  12. Oh and by the way there was no Round in Bahrain last year as Bahrain decided to cancel it later due to Anti-Government Protests I think they must of mean 2010 Bahrain Race

  13. So good news for those in SA/WA but now those on us on the East coast are stuck with SD on TEN. Like I’ve said I can live with SD as long as it’s live but since they are ‘allowing’ the rest of the country to see it live on ONE why not the Eastern states?

Seriously TEN just put it live on ONE HD for all, wonder what we’ll get next round on ONE HD?

  14. David I think you have made a mistake in the Page where it says “……ONE in Adelaide and South Australia when it airs on TEN on the East Coast” when should it be One in Adelaide and Perth when it airs on Ten on the East Coast

  15. “But we recognise that viewers in Adelaide and Perth want live sport”

Really? Was there ever any assumption that viewers were ok with delayed sport? Just admit you stuffed up and stop embarrassing yourselves TEN spokespeople.

  16. At least they get it live but its not good enough if you ask me. We still get SD coverage and that hideous TEN Live watermark. They never should have put it back on TEN. Keep it on One where it belongs!

  17. Thanks Ten for appreciating for the Non-Eastern States on bringing back Live Coverage on One in HD. Well done on rethinking about the Coverage. Now we are very happy people.
I will now think that you will win back viewers since The Voice is not on Sunday which could make you’s win Sunday
