FOX Sports, Cloudstreet and Selling Houses Australia: Extreme were the big winners at last night’s ASTRA Awards in Sydney.
FOX Sports won the top prize, Channel of the Year over SKY News, Showcase and The LifeStyle Channel. FOX Sports also picked up Most Outstanding Sports Program or Coverage for the KFC T20 Big Bash League and Most Outstanding Use of Innovation in Programming for its FOX FIELD technology.
Tim Winton’s cloudstreet received the award for Most Outstanding Drama while Kerry Fox took Most Outstanding Performance by an Actor – Female and Lara Robinson won Best New Talent. The Drama award was accepted by producers Kim Vecera, Des Monaghan and Brenda Pam (pictured).
Selling Houses Australia Extreme won the show’s third consecutive Favourite Program – Australian award while host Andrew Winter received the Favourite Personality – Male Award also for the third time.
The very-behaved presentation was sans host, but opened with the Sydney Dance Theatre followed by Rove McManus. Other performers included Pete Murray and Timomatic. Most presenters stuck to the autocue script on the night, although when Steve Liebmann was presenting the Journalist award he was handed the wrong envelope and noted ‘David Wenham’ was probably not the right winner. “That was almost a Sarah Murdoch moment.” he quipped.
The night also included a video tribute to Austar’s 17 yr legacy, with former Group Director of Corporate Development accidentally referring to the bright future for Foxstar -before correcting herself.
There weren’t too many upsets on the night, although Camp Orange‘s Luke and Wyatt did well to defeat Rove McManus and Andrew Winter as Most Outstanding Presenter. When they joked that there must have been a mistake on the envelope, presenter Eddie McGuire awkwardly agreed with them.
FOX Sports’ Phil Kearns won over the crowd when accepting an award for the FOX FIELD technology. He basically said he had no idea what it was…
But the highlight of the night was the surprise appearance by Molly Meldrum, introduced by Tina Arena (see other story).

One Response
The Astra Awards are basically just Foxtel giving itself a pat on the back…. with the disguise of some of the awards being voted by the public
