TEN unrolls new promos for The Shire

TEN finally gave us its first actual glimpse of The Shire with Sophie, Vernesa and Rif Raf........

TEN finally gave us its first actual glimpse of The Shire last night.

They included two ‘business women and “Wifeys”‘ Sophie (27) and Vernesa (28) who admitted they were happy having a fake look.

“If you wren’t born with it, just buy it,” said one.

Another featured 21 year old aspiring rapper ‘Rif Raf’ with a snippet of his latest rap from the comfort of the home he shares with his mum.

It quickly got people talking on Twitter.

All were very different to the glam surfer boys and girls on the current ad. Will the Real People with the Real Stories kindly step forward?

You can see the promos on YouTube.

It all begins 8pm Monday on TEN.

  1. By the end of the ratings season this will have gone along with Bingle, YTT, the new reality program based on Priscill queen of the desert….. this follows a long line of other woeful reality programs that ten makes a dogs breakfast of ……..

Change your format ten before you go broke …….

  2. niccky123::”I’ve lived in the UK for the last 4 years and this sort of stuff is on everywhere and very popular. I’m amazed that it’s taken this long to get here!”

Just goes to show what poor taste the Brits have then 😉 Really, I wish it had never got here. We need this like we all need holes in our heads. Dumbed down mind rotting drivel.

  3. “Real people with real stories”??

Surely you didn’t believe that garbage David 😉

This is clearly semi-scripted (and badly acted) crap along the lines of Jersey Shore and its even sadder UK equivalent, which only sad teens with low aspirations will want to watch.

Which probably means it will rate its socks off…

    Unfortunately 🙁

Nicky, I do not find this funny… I do find it stupid, and I also find it cruel. The people in these shows clearly do not know what they are letting themselves in for and how they are going to be portrayed, or they do not care… either way it is sad.

  4. I think done well this kind of show “the shire” has the potential to be a hit and pretty addictive TV.

But judging by the botched marketing campaign Ten has done and the terrible clips it just looks bad.

There needs to be highs and lows and compelling characters and story lines (even if they are staged)

    This just looks dull.

  5. Big Brother, worked here initially but took time to catch on in international markets. As did Survivor which endure mixed ratings and mixed responses in Scandinavia.

The Apprentice is also another example of a reality format that launched soft here and didn’t grow until S2.

I’m not saying it’s the case for all the genre. I am just making the point that people quickly forget shows we see as big hits didn’t always start out this way.

  6. Andrew, please check historic ratings data on the show’s you’re quoting I think you’ll find Australian Survivor didn’t bit, you’ll also find Big Brother was slow to build as was MasterChef.

The above examples have also shown themselves to be true internationally.

My point is, a new genre takes time to bed in.

    1. I agree with Andrew on this one. Big Brother and Survivor were instant hits. Australian Survivor flopped but only after years of the US version (the real show) being a hit first -that’s why they attempted the local series. MasterChef did not bite in its first few weeks but quickly made up for it becoming a phenomenon in its first season. The Shire is the first of its kind on primetime FTA and will probably take some educating for the audience, as I believe it has for some execs.

  7. @niccky123: I’m not sure I agree that “when competition reality shows came about, people initially didn’t get them”.

When the first reality shows like Big Brother, Survivor and Popstars (pre-Idol) were new, people were very enthusiastic about them before they launched and they were massive hits from day one… so I think people did “get” them.

I just don’t think people are overly enthusiastic about The Shire. And looking at the promos that have been offered, I know I’m not.

  8. Looks great. People will be down about this show, but they need to realise

a)it’s a new genre and just like when competition reality shows came about, people initially didn’t get them.

b)it’s meant to be funny and stupid… that’s the point, stop taking yourself so seriously and just enjoy some guilty pleasures.

I’ve lived in the UK for the last 4 years and this sort of stuff is on everywhere and very popular. I’m amazed that it’s taken this long to get here!

  9. I really love it. I was laughing my ass off. Much more tongue in cheek than I expected. Very much like the Amy Childs character of Essex.

I think Ten have nailed this one.

  10. It was clear from the start that the decent looking people from the first promo wouldn’t actually be in the show. It’s full of floor chicks with fake tans.
