2.09m for Howzat finale, but TEN plummets.

Ratings: Part II of Kerry Packer's War tops the night but it just gets worse for Network TEN.

The second and final instalment of Howzat: Kerry Packer’s War drew another big crowd of 2.09m viewers, just under the 2.1m it enjoyed last week.

The cricket drama pulled a huge 770,000 in Melbourne and 557 in Sydney. Even in memory the godfather of the network was able to smash the opposition. TEN slumped to another disastrous figure behind the ABC.

Nine bowled over a whopping 39.8% share then Seven 27.8%, ABC 16.8%, TEN 10.9% and SBS 4.7%.

60 Minutes was Nine’s next best performer with 1.66m then Nine News (1.39m), Big Brother‘s first eviction (1.25m) and a repeat of Underbelly (447,000).

Seven News (1.53m) and Sunday Night (1.46m) both won their timeslots. Seven’s other showings were Kath & Kim (892,000), and Criminal Minds (550,000 / 365,000).

ABC News (931,000) led ABC1 followed by Grand Designs Revisited (919,000), Dream Build (845,000), Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple (732,000), Inspector George Gently (346,000) and Compass (338,000).

It was a terrible night for TEN with a Modern Family replay (554,000 / 386,000) its best offering then TEN News (480,000), The Simpsons (384,000), NCIS (332,000), The Graham Norton Show (326,000) and The Project (323,000).

Meet the Romans (318,000) was best on SBS ONE then World News Australia (201,000), Inside Nature’s Giants (186,000) and Movie: Sicko (150,000).

Movie: Total Recall on 7mate (218,000) topped multichannels.

  1. @susanP Yeah its just aextra figure to pull out when they get big numbers. Remember9 doing it with the voice stating that almost 1/4 of Australia (5 mil) watched an episode of the Voice. No idea where the regional numbers are found online though

  2. The only thing TEN has going for it now is the news with the one hour format allowing more detailed and longer segments such as last night’s features about the death of Neil Armstrong. When TEN experienced similar ratings and revenue problems in the 1990s they screened almost wall-to-wall episodes of The Simpsons. Now even Bart and co are bombing.

  3. @AndyG..thank you. Well, in this case I’m wrong and I apologise (to those I critiqued)…however…it seems strange to me to usually talk ratings in terms of the 5 capital cities and then, when it suits, to draw in all the other figures. I must be missing something here. Where are regional figures usually found for each day?

  4. lol @ Ten. this is now a race to see how low it can go. If Ten doesn’t seriously start listening to it’s viewers then they might aswell shut up shop. The best thing Ten could do now is write up a major survey and put it on its website for our views on all things Ten

  5. Sorry but given every show on Ten between the news and the Moto GP was a repeat, did they actually expect to get any ratings? I don’t like seeing Ten in this state, but you have to be realistic.

  6. My link is a bit confusing. The headline and first sentence read: “Howzat! scores close to three million viewers” and “The second part of the cricket drama hit the competition for six with nearly three million watching the Kerry Packer miniseries…”

Picky perhaps but the ratings, as said, were fabulous. No need to add a million.

  7. David I was wondering, TEN is getting very close to single figures, how long is it since one of the main commercial networks went that low? I think The Moops comment about the Murdoch effect is a bit far-fetched, as I doubt whether such issues would trully impact on most people’s viewing patterns. I suspect it is more to do with the constant repeats and abuse of the audience with late starting times etc.
I also think the constant “encore” showings of all the networks is likely to work against them. Weekends we are being given a choice of sport or “encores”, not what I would call entertainment!!

  8. Headlines like this peeve me….the ratings were great…no need to bulk up another million viewers:
    news.com.au/entertainment/television/howzat-kerry-packmers-war-pulls-in-over-2million-viewers/story-e6frfmyi-1226458737833

  9. Ten’s numbers are pretty much the same as a Digital Channel now – it is going to take years to rebuild that brand… Plus with no sport to ever promote off, I have a feeling they are going to be in the wilderness for a long time to come

  10. The continuing downward spiral of Ten is now very worrying. I am beginning to think that the ship may be truly sinking and I agree with bettestreep, I’m starting to get a serious One-Tel vibe about this. Ten has been in dire straits before, but this has been going on for a while now and no end appears to be in sight.

I also wonder whether people are boycotting Ten due to the odiousness of the Murdochs. We had the phone hacking affair with the News of the World in the UK a few months ago which has seriously tarnished the Murdochs and I’m wondering if part of Ten’s problem is that they are too closely aligned with the Murdoch family? Of course, their naff programming is their main concern, but I’m just wondering if there is general audience distaste by association?

  11. Luke W – I’m also predicting that SBS might beat Ten this week.

Ten is persisting with repeats of MF and NCIS while SBS is going to air the controversial GBTWYCF.

IWS will be slaughtered again by BB and X Factor and the excellent PB and Class of will suffer because of a poor lead in.

My prediction for this week will be that SBS will beat Ten on 3 of the nights and Ten’s highest rating show will be PB on 800-900K.

Stephen Conroy should be asking Murdoch a lot of questions before another One.Tel occurs.

  12. I think it’s very clear from these results that what the Australian people want to watch is big cheesy moustaches. Ten, I recommend you make a new miniseries about Robert ‘Dipper’ DiPierdomenico.

  13. I’m tipping that this Thursday night, SBS will beat TEN in the primary channel share. The situation is that dire. They’re almost better off putting Eleven as their main channel and demote TEN to a multi channel!

  14. Criminal Minds goes from 1.1m on Wednesday to half that on Sunday. Seven stop showing it twice a week, and now 3 times a week and keep it on Wednesdays. You will kill a show if you do that.

Howzat did very well last night and it was a good conclusion. Glad Sunday Night is performing well. Its really covering some very good stories this year.

Channel TEN have run out of ideas. The network has become a joke and well i watch one show on it, but even then its a recorded one and that is Puberty Blues. The rest of the lineup is a joke.

  15. Criminal Minds did start until 9.00 or 9.30 last night in Adelaide due to everything being bumped for AFL, so that may also have been the reason for the low rating.

Also, what is with 7mate showing family movies lately, it’s skewing quite far from the male audience they are trying to reach when they show films such as ‘Over the Hedge’, ‘A Bug’s Life’ and other animated films.

  16. I would keep Criminal Minds in the 8.30 slot for one more week to see if it does better (certainly can’t do any worse than 550K) there will be no Howzat and I think House Husbands will do average numbers when it is put up against NCIS new episodes and possibly Criminal Minds.
