Report: Nine nabs Australia’s Got Talent

Just hours after Seven axes its talent show come reports that Nine has secured the show.

Whoever said the Australian TV industry was dull?

Just hours after confirmation that Seven had axed Australia’s Got Talent come reports that Nine is finalising deals with Simon Cowell to secure the show.

News Limited reports Nine is keen to retain Dannii Minogue as one of the show’s judges, but other reports suggest she has a Seven Network contract.

Nabbing Australia’s Got Talent could see Nine strengthen its schedule in the second half of the year, potentially against Seven’s own X Factor brand.

Shows changing networks is rare but not without precedent in Australia. TEN famously snaffled Neighbours after Seven axed the show and Nine has found success with Big Brother, formerly on TEN.

Seven cited costs and disappointing ratings as the key reasons behind its decision to move on from the FremantleMedia series.

FremantleMedia Australia declined to comment.

A Nine spokesperson indicated an announcement is imminent.

  1. Who really knows whats in Dannii’s contract. Maybe its only if AGT went for another year on 7. One would think she would have an opt out clause if the show never went ahead as she is in demand in the UK. This show will have to add at least another 300k viewers if not up against The Voice.

  2. Dannii Minogue is under contract with Seven until the end of 2013. She will be remunerated immaterial of her working status. I can’t imagine her being paid by two rival networks. If legally possible, her current contract should be voided so she can go over to Nine, no loss there.

The suggestion of Simon intervening in order to prevent AGT on Nine going up against The X Factor on Seven is derisory. It’s all about his bottom line at the end of the day.

Finally, the inference Seven stand to be the losers and Nine being the winners and smart for purchasing this format is insane. Not everything old is new again. I hope Seven use the funds they saved to nab the next big thing.

  3. There is no way Simon Cowell will let X Factor go head to head with Australia’s Got Talent. I could be wrong but i just can’t see this happening.

Like i said yesterday cancelling this show instead of DWTS was Seven’s biggest mistake to date imo. This show all it needs is some great contestants like 2011 had and the show will be huge. Seven’s loss will be Nine’s gain if you ask me.

  4. For a moment I was sooo pleased that at least one interminable talent show had bitten the dust, then Nooooo, someone else has taken up the cudgel.

    When will this misery end.

  5. I strongly believe one of the networks should launch a non-competitive variety programme. All these other shows are constantly “discovering” talent, only to then move on to the next competition. All these “talents” who are ejected from the shows and then just disappear – this even happens to some of the winners. Surely there is an audience who don’t want to vote, but would watch their favourites entertain them again. Maybe this is something the ABC could do – they seem to be on a high at the moment.

  6. I just don’t believe 7 when they talk about the .costs of AGT. It never had the production values of Xfactor or The Voice. It only really had one year with average ratings and that was only because a juggernaut like The Voice came along.
Never really been a Nine fan but i think this is a masterstroke. Hope they get Dannii.

  7. I found AGT embarrassingly corny compared to the British version. A new host and judges would go a long way in making this watchable. Finally Nine seem to be making some smart decisions as of late!

  8. TV channels are in crisis, and this is how they deal with it? They’re not going to win viewers by churning out low grade second-hand rubbish like this over and over again. We are over-saturated with talent shows, bland reality soaps, and constantly repeated episodes of a narrow range of sitcoms. Networks need to get their head back in the game, but this is not the way to do it.

  9. Surely as part of the deal Simon will do what he can to ensure Nine don’t put AGT against his other big brand.

If Nine have any sense they might go for the British approach of having all the live shows in one week (and live, not pre-recorded days earlier!)

  10. If Nine do put AGT against X Factor, they will see the show suffer the same fate as AGT did on Seven against The Voice this year.

AGT will fit nicely between The Voice concluding in June and X Factor starting in August next year.

But Nine may now have too much reality in 2013! 9 shows and counting – two at once for most of the year, including one stripped at 7pm, and another on top.

  11. Interesting move. One thing is for sure, Simon Cowell will not let his two shows go head ot head in the same timeslot – thats not good business. Would not be surprised if there is some kind of clause written into a contract.

  12. Good luck to X Factor next year. They’re gonna need it. Australia’s Got Talent might improve in ratings because they’re not just a singing competition show.
