Sunrise gets a Gangnam ratings jump

Ratings: K-Pop came and conquered Sunrise adding another 100,000 viewers to its usual numbers. But primetime was pretty flat.

Sunrise enjoyed a Gangnam Style lift yesterday with big numbers thanks to its Martin Place appearance by K-Pop star Psy.

It pulled 462,000 viewers, a boost of 100,000 on the preceding Wednesday. By comparison Today was 336,000, Breakfast was 43,000 on TEN and ABC News Breakfast was 42,000 / 32,000 on its two channels.

In primetime the numbers were soft but ABC had some wins and TEN still has big problems.

Seven Network won the night 30.5% then Nine 26.8%, ABC 21.2%, TEN 16.4% and SBS 5.1%.

Surveillance Oz (1.12m) was the night’s top show for Seven then Seven News (1.06m), Highway Patrol (1.05m), Criminal Minds (980,000), Today Tonight (930,000), Home and Away (832,000), World’s Wildest Police Videos (562,000). Deal or No Deal was 431,000 and Covert Affairs was 226,000.

Nine could not pass the magic million with Nine News on 993,000. A Current Affair was 937,000, Big Brother Little Sister was 834,000, Embarrassing Bodies was 606,000, Hot Seat was 536,000 and Who Do You Think You Are? was 264,000.

Gruen Planet (1.01m) topped ABC1 then ABC News (1.01m), both winning their timeslots. The Hamster Wheel was 875,000, followed by Qi (791,000,), Randling (447,000), At the Movies (321,000) and Lateline (211,000).

TEN News remains TEN’s strongest but only on 627,000. Modern Family was 541,000, The Project 6pm was 396,000, Last Man Standing was just 362,000 / 345,000. A strong drama like The Good Wife is on life support at just 343,000 and a replay of Homeland was a paltry 205,000.

Living with the Amish was 239,000 for SBS ONE then Meet My Wild Friends (226,000) and World News Australia (165,000).

Heartbeat topped multichannels with 301,000 on 7TWO.

  1. I don’t mind The Good Wife. There have ben some weird scenes with the ex husband of the indian woman, which make me think they are trying to be like cable. Last nights scene was even more salacious than I saw on PB.

Any news on when/if Dallas is returning? Wednesday night needs it to off set all of nine’s inane shows.

  2. I personally do not watch The Good Wife, it does not appeal to me, but I know some people who love it. The lead in from Last Man Standing is doing it no favours at all, no wonder no-one is watching the Good Wife.

Stupid sitcoms do more harm than good, not only do people not watch them but they don’t watch what is on after them either!! The only sitcom I can stand is Modern Family, (and only if they are new episodes).

Ch 9 has crappy sitcoms covered so don’t try and copy them Ch 10. Ch 10 viewers want something a bit more edgier. There is a whole market that commercial TV is ignoring!! Simply because they are scared of offending someone. The Walking Dead would have been great but its too late now, Foxtel FX have it and showing it within 2 days from USA. If you show it more than a week after USA then don’t bother showing it at all.

Shows like Breaking Bad, Dexter, Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones, Tangle (Foxtel) Love my Way (Foxtel) are all fantastic shows and most never see commercial TV and if they do they are years after they were on in the USA. People will not put up with that these days. Tangle, Love my Way, should be bought by Ch 10 as they cannot be downloaded and are great shows.

Honestly this website plus The Age has had many viewers comment on things that can be done to improve the Ch 10, hopefully someone at 10 is reading this stuff and taking note.

The problem is now Ch 10 probably have no money left to actually get some decent shows.

  3. Likely the last season of The Good Wife in the US anyway with such poor ratings for CBS on a Sunday night. Such a shame as its one the very best drama on television. Good on Ten for sticking with it, but I suppose they don’t really have much else to replace it with anyway if they wanted to yank it.

  4. To be fair, Puberty Blues was classified MA15+ on DVD/Blu-ray hence why some may have considered to be a tad heavy for its M classification on TV (Ten has a history of giving shows lower classifications than they deserve in order to give certain shows more appealing timeslots).

  5. Obviously The Good Wife is a good show. Personally I haven’t taken the time to watch it because the promos make it look incredibly boring.
A lot of head turns and shocked looks on faces. All with an over dramatic voice over read. Then it ends with a cliff hanger (which is clearly made up).
Don’t get me started on the Puberty Blues promos.
Brilliant show! Promos made it look like Home and Away.

  6. The Good Wife gets the ratings it deserves. It is a foreign production and the current trend is mainly for local aussie produced drama to perform more strongly (ex DA & Revenge). As regards comparisons with PB, I did not like the M rated content and somewhat gratuitous sexual apsects, however it was well produced and well acted and subsequently rated better than Wifey…

  7. Everything on Ten is going to be a bad lead in to whatever is on afterwards. It’s obvious looking at what crap rates on Seven and Nine while good shows get smashed on Ten, that apart from Masterchef and maybe Biggest Loser the average person just ignores the channel completely.

Either that or the ratings system is severely flawed and biased towards a certain type of person.

  8. Would be good to see something different at 5.30pm on Seven. Deal has been there for years and has surely had its day. Best to change rather than letting ratings fall further as people get bored with it. 431,000 not good at all. Although I hate the format, Hot Seat is more watchable.

  9. It’s a pretty sad state of affairs the top show of the night is a surveillance clip show…The Good Wife deserves much better numbers.

I think Ten might need a complete marketing reset next year, something obviously isn’t resonating with the public

There’s a bit of Ten bashing going on of late but not a lot of good ideas/suggestions surrounding what would draw eyeballs and renew their ratings fortunes…

  10. Just going to be a bit pedantic, Gruen Planet received 1.018m viewers in the 5 city market so in the summary when rounding should be displayed as 1.02m, not as 1.01m.

  11. Look at the lead in for The Goodwife – that did not help either. I dont think Last Man Standing and The Goodwife are a good pair.

Its funny the majority of the show on TV that I am watching are Homeland, the Goodwife and Modern Family – Channel Ten shows. I dont know how viewers can stand the reality crap over seriously addictive and well made series

  12. Go Psy. appearances on various shows from One Direction, Justin Bieber, beyonce, pink, gaga have had little impact on ratings but Psy really seems to be bringing them in.

  13. How the heck can The Good Wife pull half the numbers of a trashy show like Puberty Blues that was airing just a few weeks prior?

I watched the Hamster Wheel last night, it was a great episode. Good to have the Chaser back on TV.

Nothing Ten does right now will succeed, their best chance at a revival will be next year with TBL giving their programs a somewhat-decent lead in next year (at least better than Modern Family reruns)

  14. I cannot understand TEN’s ratings in general. A solid night of quality programming in slaughtered by programmes showing surveillance videos.. what the truck Australia..!!?

  15. Say goodbye to The Good Wife on those numbers. However, let’s hope Ten just stay with the programming they have in place each night until the end of the ratings year and continue through non ratings with it where possible and maybe, just maybe, things may start to improve.
