They are all iconic TV characters -but which is the best?
TV Tonight will soon be asking you to vote for our finest Australian television characters -those fictional creations that writers, comedians and creative people have put on our screens.
But first it’s time for you to put forward some names….
Please leave your suggestions below in ANY the following categories:
Best Sitcom Character
Best Sketch Comedy Character
Best Soap Character
Best Drama Character (ie. other adult drama)
Best Kid’s TV character
Best Live Animal Character
Best Variety Character
Best Pay TV Character
NB: As this is a preliminary stage, names only need to be put forward once for consideration. So if your suggestion has already been put forward, you don’t need to repeat it.
All names must be fictional characters.
Voting will begin in a separate TV Tonight survey later.

Can’t believe we’ve forgotten: “My Names McGooley, What’s yours?” Stellar cast Gordon Chatter, John Mellion, Judi farr, Nolene Brown. Also Frank Fring in”Up the Convicts”. What about “Let the Blood run Free”. All giants of the comedy genre. Anything Graham Kennedy did. This is going to be hard…

Hoges, Strop, Fatso the Wombat, Bouncer, Woodrow, Dickie Knee.
Would you consider Farscape to be Australian? Aeryn Sun or Chiana would be worth consideration, but maybe they’re too much of a cult interest.

Best soap character has to be Molly from a country practice. The country actually mourned. Her death scene was riveting tv although no death scene shown.
Bet drama character is Rake.
And Magda in the neck brace in fast forward for sketch comedy.
Oh, and i got one more…
Although non-speaking and not that ”livable”, do the likes of Fatso the Fat-Arsed Wombat (from The Dream with Roy and HG) and any of the ”characters” (Big Ted, Jemima, etc) on Play School count by any means?
@David K. – he’s not my favourite any more but at the time I thought the Steve Vizard ‘Come fly with me” gay steward was fairly amusing.
Fortunately ones’ tastes change as one moves towards maturity.
@Andrew – I remember that too! I think my gag was a bald-faced rip-off, actually. But Ray Martin (aka “Mr Australia”) was an actual fictional character portrayed by Eric Bana in Full Frontal (or Fast Forward). Incredibly Banal he was too.
Mrs Jessup – The Sullivans, the predessor to Mrs Mangle and played by the same actress.
