2.23m as My Kitchen Rules crushes The Block, MasterChef.

2.23m for MKR as Seven leaves The Block and Masterchef under the magic million.

2013-02-05_1002We’re not even in ratings season yet but the game is on. Or as My Kitchen Rules would put it, “Game on, moll.”

Last night’s episode with Jessie and Biswa’s disastrous Indian cuisine dinner party proved irresistible to viewers with a whopping 2.23m viewers.

It left the competition on Nine and TEN in its wake.

The Block: All Stars debuted with 959,000 viewers and MasterChef: The Professionals simmering on a tepid 627,000.

It was the first night all three had gone head to head in the early evening, although Nine got a jump start with The Block by 30 minutes. All three aired simultaneously between 7:30 – 8:00.

For Seven to increase its margin, and by a country mile, shows the strength of its MKR brand. It was the highest rated episode outside of last year’s MKR finale. By contrast The Block had its lowest-ever launch and MasterChef sank to its lowest numbers outside of a Masterclass episode, fourth in its timeslot.

Seven also scored 1.5m for the return of Revenge.

TEN had better news from Sunday night with Elementary‘s premiere of 1.23m but it faces stiff competition from Downton Abbey, Midsomer Murders and cricket this Sunday.

  1. The best thing about MKR last night is you were so expecting them to at least nail something.

The idea of baked yogurt makes me want to dry heave.

So it was entertaining right to the end.

Masterchef the professionals is fine. Although some weird stuff going on in the judging. A lot of people have commented on how different people get judged at different levels.

Elementary is just using the Sherlock Holmes brand to make a generic procedural. They always rate well people because with no personality and old like to watch these shows. They’re simple. You don’t have to watch every week. You know what you’ll get and it’ll never challenge you or require a single ounce of thought when it’s not on.

  2. Jeez, I must have been one of the 12 people in Oz who didn’t watch MKR. I got caught up in one of the funniest episodes of Mythbusters. Must make a point of watching MKR next week, yes definitely, oh look a butterfly!

  3. Sherlock S2 was up against MKR/Please Marry My Boy etc. It rated 876k, 729k & 738k overnight. And appeared in the list of 2012 dramas with high +7s.

S1 of Sherlock was thrown by Channel 9 into a hole, without much promotion and it surprised them with how well it did. They repeated it over Summer to try and build and audience for S2.

  4. @smit0847 – I have to agree with your comment abut the instant restaurant rounds being better than kitchen hq.

I actually think the masterchef (amaeteur version)does the headquarters stuff better thank mkr. I’m actually not sure if I will continue watching once mkr ends the instant restaurant stage depends on what happents.

  5. 2.23? That is amazing. I don’t like the show myself, but good on 7 for that figure.

On a sour note, I was disgusted with the amount of racist hate directed at these two over Twitter and Facebook. Why can’t people just dislike them and leave their race and background out of it?

Pity about Masterchef All Stars but, sorry 10, it’s all your fault.

  6. A great start to this season of Revenge. Also a fantastic Big Bang Theory episode – nice to see a new one!! The chicken pecking was so funny! I missed Elementary on sunday night – is it worth watching?

  7. Last nights MKR was always going to rate well. Who doesnt like watching unlikeable people fail? (ie Lleyton Hewitt, tall poppy syndrome etc). It was so much more entertaining than the dull launch episode with Kath Day-Knight where everything went ‘fairly well’.
MKR is a very easy show to watch, even if its dragged out so much. I still cant work out why these people dont practice and practice and practice their dishes beforehand so the night goes smoothly – I guess theyre not used to cooking in such large quantities.
For me, the instant restaurant rounds are far more entertaining than the kitchen HQ challenges (which are all the same, and just like MC).
I would happily watch an MKR that is just instant restaurants where the guests are just 6 judges (with maybe 2 celebrity comedian guests or former winners or something) and the judges decide how much prize money to award at the end of each episode depending on how well they went. 1 ep a week for 12 weeks with this format would be interesting.

  8. I have watched both MKR and Masterchef Professionals, both good for their genre. contrived reality…I despair for the viewers who want to watch good shows,

Sunday nights are going to be a PVR night with Elementary and Downton and ABC offering Grand Designs and Midsomer. Two PVR’s may be the answer. But keen Downton viewers like myself have the season via the UK DVD set, and have alreadywatched it or most episodes.

  9. Totally love MKR, it is the only reality series I watch now (I gave up on MC after the dreadful third season) and last night’s episode was an absolute cracker! Karma sure is a you-know-what! I’m glad it crushed to a pulp that ridiculous and bogus Block All Stars nonsense and its pretty obvious that Masterchef Professionals is dead in the water and will limp towards a viewer indifferent finale. Much as I dislike the NSW girls, they make great TV and I hope they are not eliminated, but their score was so pathetic, the remaining two dinners in this round will really have to crash and burn to get less than them.

  10. I watched seven last night because it had three shows in a row I wanted to watch ie. home and away, mkr and revenge whereas ten only had masterchef which I pvr and will watch when I have a chance.

  11. Right, so Sherlock gets appalling ratings while Elementary gets pretty good ones?

I’m utterly confused on what quality Australians like to watch.

Although, I guess, the USA version is probably dumbed down. Sherlock was much too fast for average people.

  12. What is going on with the australian tv veiwing public when stupid shows like MKR a rating so high. it seems that they are going down hill like our pollies!!Please wake up and watch some good stuff the ABC has to offer.

  13. Replays of Masterchef for people who missed episodes will boost ratings not reduce them. There is nothing wrong with Masterchef or its programming, it rated 1.124m on Sunday up against The Force/Border Security and the cricket.

Masterchef just got squeezed between MKR, The Block/Big Bang Theory and the ABC’s strong news and current affairs line up on Mondays.
Channel 10 just doesn’t have must watch TV.

You need the +7s to get a full idea of everything that was watched last night on TV. There will probably more non-sport stuff watched last night than there was over summer.

  14. I’m disappointed in MKR. It’s cast on tabloid selling personalities it’s uncomfortable to watch the contestants look on as the judges eat – they should all eat at the same time and convey some sort of party atmosphere. So far it’s the worst season yet.

On the flip, I’m stunned MC is not doing as well as it deserves. It’s a much better recipe and more intelligently cast. No interest whatsoever in The Block.

  15. @Bogues – Exactly right. This constant rerun idea is nonsense. e.g. We didn’t watch MC last night. It’s on again today, and at the weekend, and, and.
No need to watch it tonight either. No need to go thru all the drama of the PVR – if we do want to see it. Sorry TEN, can’t relate to the “professionals”. The Block is fake as they have to use licenced tradesmen for most of the work.

  16. I wonder if the fact that Masterchef has up to four replays during the week hurt the first run ratings.

The thing about MKR is the contestants are ordinary people. The Block has previous contestants (therefore minor celebrities), and Masterchef has professionals.
