Mel B to judge Australia’s Got Talent on Nine

Nine reveals its hand as Mel B jumps from The X Factor to Australia's Got Talent.

2013-03-17_1819Mel B is returning to the judging desk in Australia, but not to The X Factor.

Instead she will join Australia’s Got Talent, the show Nine secured from Seven after the latter rested the series.

It’s quite a coup for Nine, given she was so successful on The X Factor. Nine is expected to announce two more judges this week.

Brown’s availability was thrown into question when she signed for America’s Got Talent amid suggestions of visa problems and dates clashing.

Judging on AGT would mean less time required because there is no mentoring of acts, as required on The X Factor.

Brown has made no secret of her affection for living and working in Australia.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports she said the gig will be “a great opportunity to continue to spend time in Australia and discover more of the exceptional talent you have an abundance of.”

Auditions for AGT began in Melbourne this weekend.

Rumours about new judges on both Seven and Nine talent shows has been an industry guessing game, with suggestions Sharon Osbourne could be headed for one.

But in addition to replacing Melanie Brown on The X Factor, Seven will now also need to find a new co-host for Dancing with the Stars.

Update: Seven wins injunction against Mel B switching to Nine

  1. Any chance an Australian getting a gig on as a host or judge on the voice or agt. Delta better watch out with the foreign invasion of this country. Channel 9 foreign owned now jobs only for foreigners. What is next Karl Lisa on today being replaced by overseas workers as well. These 457 visas getting a work out.

  2. I like Mel B but not AGT. Liking her is not enough for me to start watching AGT. I watched it once when a man was using vegetables as musical instruments. No. Not for me.

  3. That’s a bit of a shock. Thought her America’s Got Talent appointment was because of Oz Visa issues. Logistically though it makes sense – as David said, no mentoring so not as big a time commitment. Would love to see her go up against Sharon Osbourne – fireworks!!

X Factor – I can see Dannii doing it – would also find Redfoo really interesting as a mentor – he’s not a singer but with all of his collaborations he has connections and knowledge.

Gotta say also – I don’t think DWTS is coming – Celebrity Splash seems to have taken its slot. I’d rather Kate Ritchie than Kerri Ann – purely because I don’t see Kerri Ann in a secondary role – she’s above it and Kate would be great – her time on radio means she knows how to work live!

  4. Wow, Never seen that one coming. Happy that Mel B is still in Australia working. Hope they get Chris Isaak too. Will be intersesting as he is in Australia and doing Can Of Worms tomorrow night.

  5. Mel B leaving Seven is a interesting move indeed.

I think people will likely start asking questions about whether DWTS is coming back in 2013: After all, last year’s dancers and celebrities were revealed by now: and Celebrity Splash is being promoted heavily by Seven.

  6. I never watched AGT on 7 and won’t be watching it on 9 either. I can’t stand her so glad she won’t be back on Dancing With The Stars. What is it with getting these judges from overseas, surely there are plenty of Aussies who would be just as good.

  7. You are kidding me? This is just bizarre. One minute she is doing America’s Got Talent then she is doing Australia’s Got Talent? I am confused by all of this. I like Mel B but to leave X Factor for this? IMO That sucks. Seven will be kicking themselves right now. First they lose AGT then they lose Mel B. What next?

  8. Sam G – The reason she became known as Mel B was to distinguish herself from the other Melanie in the Spice Girls – Melanie C (Chisholm). The other girls usually just were known by their first names (Emma, Victoria, etc) so the other two couldnt be known as simply Melanie, and didnt want people to always have to say their last names to split them apart.

  9. Strange decision by her. Why would you give up a top spot on a high rating music talent show for one that’s on the decline and not really about the music? She must have been offered an obscene amount of money to do that.

  10. Whats the chances Dannii will end up on X Factor? In effect just a swap, they are probably each more suited to the other formats than they used to be on

  11. Is it just me or are there too many talent shows now?
When a Channel getrs a good idea everyone copies it or makes their own version. How about some original thinking !

  12. This is really strange. I thought the whole issue about whether or not she was doing X Factor again was due to possible Visa issues, but now she’s signed up to Australia’s Got Talent?

Wonder how the X Factor team feel about this. She could still do both (Kyle did – at least in the first series of X Factor) but I guess the fact that AGT is now on 9 and she has other commitments overseas may complicate things.

  13. Intersting i though she going to be a judge oversea’s and now defected to Channel 9 , will be intesting who they get to replace her on x factor
