Report: Grant Denyer to quit Sunrise

Update: Grant Denyer has announced he is quitting the Seven show to spend more time with family.

2013-03-28_0203Grant Denyer will reportedly announce he is quitting the Seven show today.

News Limited claims the presenter will exit due to ‘a chronic fatigue-type illness which has left him constantly exhausted and unable to cope with the early mornings and endless travel.’

Denyer was the fulltime weather presenter on the show from 2004 to 2006 and then returned in 2010 but also married and became a father.

As well as the relentless early rises, the role demands a lot of travel to the corners of the country, by both air and road.

In 2011 he noted, “You get to see some of the great places of the country, (but) it is at breakneck speed and it can’t be sustained.

“There has to be some normality pretty soon. I am not going to sacrifice my lifestyle just for a breakfast television show; it’s not worth it.”

Weekend Sunrise weatherman James Tobin, is tipped take over the role until Seven announces a replacement.

But does Seven have another role for the former Australia’s Got Talent host….?

UPDATE: This morning he told viewers he was looking forward to more time with his family.

“It’s the greatest job in the world, but … now that Sailor is nearly two she probably needs to find out who her dad is,” he said.

Media also speculates he is in talks with Nine.

  1. Let’s hope that he is the first of the regular Sunrise crew to move. The show needs to evolve and over the next couple of years the rest of them need to ‘retire’

  2. Kinda pleased about this. When Grant first started on TV, he had a larrikin, fun style that made him endearing.

Sadly, he lost all of that in recent years, and instead became irritating, annoying and smarmy. I found myself switching off every time he came on.

The old line about taking time out to spend with the family is trotted out every time by TV types, politicians, sport players etc when they are negotiating to go somewhere else. I am guessing Grant is already in talks with Ten. Which is a shame as that would make it another reason not to watch this already embattled network.

  3. during the 30th anniversary of the Today show Tracey Grimshaw said if it wasn’t for the early morning’s no one would leave.

With Grant now having a young family it would be taking its toll on him.

with a combination of constant travel and jet lag, it’s no wonder he wants out yet again… but Steve Jacobs has been with the today show for a few years now without a 2 year gap.

  4. Yay. Might switch back to sunrise now. Wanting to now kochie’s involved with Port but I have never liked Grant so stopped watching when grant came back. Just an annoying personality. Much prefer James Tobin. Still not sold on Beretta but he’s a bit more tolerable

  5. He was too much for me first thing in the morning, and I doubt Nine would want him to host AGT as someone suggested below, as he was one of the most stale parts of the show on Seven.

  6. I dont think its the greatest job in the world – I think it would be an absolutely horrible job having to travel every single day to really remote areas of the country and pretend to be excited at 6am every day on no sleep. I’m sure he’s compensated handsomely for it but I don’t know how he did it for as long as he did.

  7. Sadly Denyer is just not an endearing TV personality. He was charming when he first did the gig years ago, when he returned he became overwrought and irritating. Its a common problem for weather presenters, who have to always jump around and be excited about wherever they have been forced to be. James Tobin is one of the very very few who dont irritate. He manages to be humorous and eternally happy without grating. I am not sure of Denyer’s future, but Seven need to hang on to Tobin and look after him.

  8. I am sure Grant’s probably a nice guy but I found him very annoying when I saw him on TV- maybe I just didn’t like his style of presenting etc but I always tuned out when I saw him on tv. I really hope we don’t get to see him as a host on any tv show as I won’t be watching—think he needs to give tv a rest. I always thought James Tobin was a much better presenter and more engaging.

  9. Well i am going to take a different approach in my comment. It is courageous of him to reveal his illnes. Having had and still have CFS, it is often a burn out condition that can strike anyone of any age and experience. Maybe, by him conveying this, more people will get a sense of what it is like. Remembering too he suffered big injuries not so long ago. Good luck to him.

  10. I don’t think channel 7 have another roll for Grant but i’m sure channel 9 does…as host of Australia’s Got Talent!!

Please it’s so obvious and let be heard that i said it here first

  11. I like Grant and will be sorry to see him go. Wonder how long it will last though, he left a couple of years ago and came back. Don’t think they need to look for someone else when they have James Tobin, they can just use him.
