MasterChef Australia: June 30 – July 4

MasterChef heads to WA next week with -but where is the Mystery Box challenge this season?

mch5MasterChef heads to WA next week with guest chefs Guillaume Brahimi, Russell Blaikie, Matt Stone and Brendan Pratt.

There are again two team challenges, which to me is overkill. Where is the Mystery Box challenge this season?

There’s a change of scenery and a new flavour on MasterChef Australia when the top 15 take on wild west week in Western Australia. From finding their sea legs and catching their own fish for dinner to making an outdoor feast for 20 hungry cowboys, the competition continues to heat up. By the end of the week, another MasterChef Australia favourite will leave the competition for good.

Sunday 30 June, 7.30pm
The remaining 15 contestants find themselves at the seaside in Fremantle where they have to summon their inner hunter-gatherer and head offshore in fishing trawlers to catch their own dinner.

The group is divided into two teams, with each having just 60 minutes from when they dock to prepare and serve a meal for 30 salty sea dogs who will determine their fate. The team which gets the most votes will have the chance to cook for immunity tomorrow.

Monday 1 July, 7.30pm
The losing team from yesterday’s wild west challenge are all vying for immunity tonight, or so they think. When they arrive at Guillaume Bistro it is revealed that in today’s challenge only one contestant has the chance to win an immunity pin, and they have to decide who deserves it most.

That contestant will have support from Guillaume himself, but has to battle it out in the kitchen against Russell Blaikie from Must Winebar, and with a 30 minute advantage. If Russell wins, no one is safe from elimination.

Tuesday 2 July, 7.30pm
There’s a cattle battle today on MasterChef Australia, with the 15 remaining contestants heading to Kylagh Station in York where they must cook lunch for 20 hungry stockmen and women.

They have just 60kg of produce from which to create a buffet lunch. The clock is ticking as the workers herd cattle towards the cook site for their lunch break. The judges will decide the losing team, which will face elimination tomorrow.

Wednesday 3 July, 7.30pm
In the wild west week elimination challenge today, three contestants face off at Matt Stone’s restaurant The Green House. Matt has designed a six-dish tasting plate menu using local WA produce, of which each contestant must cook two and serve to 80 diners tonight.

They have just two hours prep time for a 90 minute service. Matt joins the judges in critiquing their dishes and their overall performance in the kitchen, with the least impressive contestant being eliminated.

Thursday 4 July, 7.30pm
In tonight’s MasterClass, we wrap up wild west week on Perth’s picturesque Cottesloe Beach. Joining the judges is guest chef Brendan Pratt of Indiana’s. Brendan puts slow roasted lamb shoulder to good use in sliders and croquettes.

Kate Lamont from Lamont’s Wine store also serves up by the seaside with two different quail dishes.

7.30pm Sunday to Thursday on TEN.

  1. I’m a huge fan of MC so I’m still watching but I’m not happy with the format of the show this season. Ditching the mystery box along with the proven format of previous seasons is a major mistake & it shows in the ratings. Throw in the stupid boys v girls thing and way too many theme weeks/trips away(three already!) and it’s not the MC we know & love. If 10 are reading this – get back to basics next season. I miss the taste tests as well, haven’t seen one in ages.

  2. The change of format is an unfolding disaster. You’re right, two team challenges within a couple of days is major overkill. Doing away with the mystery box challenge was a major mistake, to me that was always the high point of the show. Agree that the contestants and their cooking skills are shockingly underwhelming this year.

  3. Agreed. What was once must-see viewing for me has turned into “meh” this year.
None of the contestants are cooking anything wow, the challenges aren’t anything exciting and the themed weeks get tiring very quickly.
Time for a rest and a revamp in a few years time.

  4. I am beginning to sound like a broken record but not liking the format if the show whatsoever! They have removed the two best elements if the show, Sunday night mystery box, and Tuesday immunity challenge! People are not watching because they are over Masterchef but they are not watching because 10 have stripped the show of all things good about it!
