Who will play The Freak?

Foxtel teases the arrival of Joan "The Freak" Ferguson next season -but who will play the role?

2013-07-03_2355Last night’s shocking final for Wentworth sent the series out with a bang with a number of secrets revealed.

But one of the biggest twists aired after the closing credits, when Foxtel teased a hint of what’s to come in season two next year, with the sole appearance of a black leather glove….

So who will play Joan “The Freak” Ferguson?

TV Tonight understands casting is currently underway for this iconic role.

FremantleMedia Director of Drama Jo Porter said “Prisoner offered up a very rich well of amazing characters to draw upon and the Wentworth writers are very excited about revisiting the character of prison officer Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson in our second season.

“However, for now our storylines for new and existing inmates and staff shall remain in maximum security.”

Foxtel Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh said “The first season of Wentworth has won over audiences and critics. The incredible cast and crew have set the bar high for the second season and plans are in place to continue to enthral both the old guard of Prisoner fans and the new passionate Wentworth audience.”

So let’s hear your suggestions for casting? I’ll throw my hat in the ring for Robyn Malcolm, although she doesn’t have the height that Maggie Kirkpatrick had.

  1. David, you told Seance that a lot of their list weren’t actors.
How is that different to Johnny Ruffo, Samantha Jade or indeed Billie Piper and Catherine Tate in UK Doctor Who?
Many people who seek to gain work within the entertainment industry nowadays have the big three:
    Singing
    Dancing
    acting
All under their belt (Hugh’s Jackman and Sheridan for example.)
But I also thought about suggesting a male Ferguson, but I think that cribbing a bit much from Bad Girls.
I would like to see Melissa George do it when her next US foray fails. I think the idea of casting someone who has a track record as likeable characters, and giving them a chance to shine as a bad ass is always interesting.

  2. I think Lucy Lawless would suit the role of the freak, perfectly, she’s got the height and played a wicked, bad ass Xena, she has the death stare and snarl to fit the role

  3. Lucy Lawless to play Joan The Freak Ferguson – please!!!! She’s got the height, and plays evil all too well. Plus her and Danielle were together in Xena: Warrior Princess – so why not have a little reunion off set?
I hear that she is a fan of Wentworth too…

  4. How about the original Lynne Warner herself, Kerry Armstrong? They are casting nothing like the original actors, so why not go against type?

What if………the new Freak is actually a male?

  5. I would love to see Gina Riley play The Freak. If not her maybe
    Rebecca Gibney
    Magda Szubanski
    Mischel Laurie
    Chrissy Swan
I know Sue-Ann Post really wants to play her too but I see her more as a Judy Bryant.
I am really looking forward to seeing who they choose. As long as it is not Lisa McCune.

  6. There are two versatile and well-known actresses who have just wrapped up long-running TV roles and are/will be looking for new acting challenges: Rebecca Gibney and Sonia Todd. They both have the talent to pull it off, and Sonia Todd can certainly do that menacing stillness that Maggie Kirkpatrick did so well.

Clauida Karvan and Sybilla Budd are possibilities too, but I think one of the first two would be amazing.

  7. Just watched the last episode and didn’t get to see the glove. Anyone got a link to it?
I had to Google Robyn Malcolm and yeah, she’d be cool from what I’ve read. I’m happy that I didn’t recognise any of the actors in this season from other things coz it made it easier to totally get lost in them. Absolutely superb show – the best Aussie drama in years!

  8. In my opinion, this is possibly a huge error. The original Joan Ferguson character was a bit of a double-edged sword. She was brought into Prisoner when it needed freshening up after a few years and it worked. She was a completely new and compelling character, but she soon became the central focus of the show and her character was watered down and made a bit of an over-the-top character in a very unsubtle way. Maggie Kirkpatrick was always great though.

I enjoyed season 1 of Wentworth, but it is still trying to work out how it wants to tell it stories. Like the original Prisoner, the scenes between the prisoners are the most interesting and the series as a whole is finding its feet. I’m sure it will consolidate in a second series, but it certainly doesn’t need a game-changing character like the Freak yet, particularly with all the baggage a character like that will bring.

The only interesting thing for me will be if they introduce The Freak or Joan Ferguson. Will she be the ready-made villain we remember or (like Bea and Vera) will she be shaped into The Freak over the course of the season?

  9. My first thought was also Kat Stewart. She can easily do the menacing, violent Joan but also emotional, damaged side too. And she’s not too old.

  10. As if waiting for series 2 wasn’t going to be hard enough knowing the freak is going to be in it will make it unbearable as for who should play her it has to be someone who has a proven track record of playing a bitch

    Rowena Wallace
    Tina bursill
    Cornelia francess

  11. Living up to Maggie Kirkpatricks portrayal will be hard and will be judged. If Catherine McClements hadn’t played Meg I would’ve picked her as the freak.
