Brains beats Geeks

Ratings: Todd Sampson's ABC series outranks the Beauty & the Geek, while Top Gear and Revealed struggle.

1rdmbIt was a battle of the brains but the newcomer defeated the champion as ReDesign My Brain with Todd Sampson won its timeslot last night.

The ABC1 show scored 865,000 viewers, eclipsing the season premiere of Beauty and the Geek Australia (804,000). But the Seven show won in the all important demos, even topping the night overall.

Thursday was another low-audience night with a combination of less-profile shows and warmer weather biting. Of note TEN pulled out its best audience for the week for Law and Order: SVU (703,000). But Revealed which followed plummeted to just 247,000 -fifth in its slot. Can the audience be any more clearer? This is Programming 101, folks.

Seven Network share was 31.0% then Nine 24.0%, ABC 21.6%, TEN 17.4% and SBS 5.9%.

Seven News (1.08m) topped the night for Seven followed by Today Tonight (952,000), Home and Away (888,000), Beauty and the Geek Australia (804,000), How I Met Your Mother (720,000), Million Dollar Minute (495,000) and I’m a Teenage Grandmother (380,000).

Nine News (1.04m) was best for Nine followed by A Current Affair (878,000), Big Brother (801,000), Hot Seat (609,000) but new Top Gear (512,000) was fourth in its slot.

ABC News (907,000) and ReDesign My Brain With Todd Sampson (865,000) both won their timeslots for ABC1 then, 7:30 (788,000), Jennifer Byrne Presents (637,000) and Fry’s Planet Word (427,000).

Law and Order: SVU did well for TEN on 703,000, its best audience this year and it will rank as TEN’s top show of the week. Next were TEN Eyewitness News (587,000), Save with Jamie (570,000) and The Project (493,000).  The Simpsons was 295,000. Despite its bumper lead-in Revealed was just 247,000 -TEN this morning claimed its as its “biggest audience of 2013” …seriously….

Masters of Sex and Heston’s Fantastical Foods both scored 256,000 on SBS ONE. Destination Flavour was 208,000 then Madhur Jaffrey’s Curry Nation (165,000) and World News Australia 148,000.

Big Bang Theory (330,000 / 329,000) topped multichannels. Thursday FC debuted with just 25,000 -19,000 of whom were in Sydney.

Today: 322,000
Sunrise: 313,000
ABC News Breakfast: 71,000 / 36,000

  1. Yep I agree David….. TEN should change it slot for Revealed to Sunday….maybe to 11.30…….pm. It is rubbish…..US stories is just lazy…..Ten need to commit to 100% Aussie content, use Hugh properly or don’t do it al all.

  2. @ lizzie-may & sairy-james…both my daughters (late teens & early 20s) plus my spouse all absolutely love Top Gear. They like the hosts, the humour, the daft pranks, the super cars…everything about it. The ratings demise of the show came about due ch9s awful handling of it.

  3. @jason…..ahh yes those were the days….but times have changed. Just like Perfect Match worked and Hot seat worked and Deal worked….Ten really need a quality big production game show at 6pm to keep viewers…..or move news from 5pm to 6…..Moving news to 5 pm was the worst decision they ever made 20 years ago…. They have a bad hole to fill ever since!

I feel for TEN when crap like Geek can can get 800 on seven… yet if TEN put a show on like that everyone would be bagging the hell out of it and bagging ten management.

  4. “Revealed was just 247,000 -TEN this morning claimed its as its “biggest audience of 2013″ …seriously….”

Ten – the kings of spin …. little do they know they are only kidding themselves and nobody else …..

  5. Survivor won over the Geeks in my house. This is the best Survivor season ever. Last night’s Tribal Council was one of the best ever blindsides in Survivor history.

  6. Lizzie, as a young woman who considers herself a bit of a girly girl… I love Top gear. it’s one of my favourite shows. It did well with SBS because they didn’t mess it around, or play eps out of order or wait over 6 months to screen new seasons.

SBS didnt need to bombard us with Promos for it the way 9 do, because we knew when it was on, because it was in the same timeslot each and every week.

I caught a bit of Revealed last night because the Man wanted to watch the Black hawk down stuff. and we were appauled that it was promoed as new Aussie content, but was just a whole story purchased from American 60 Mins. If Revealed were producing their own stories it might be worth watching.

  7. David, in my spare time I am a grammar Nazi. I’ll give you a choice:

“any clearer?” or “any more clear?” – please, not what you currently have.

  8. @oztvheritage – Probably because there’s nothing much positive about TEN right now. Homeland on wrong night, Revealed just old CBS 60Minutes leftovers, the morning shows that have a longer gestation than an elephant, League of Their Own on wrong night, etc., etc.
I’m an ex-TEN Sydney 70s & 80s and have always had a soft spot for TEN. The current mismanagement is sad to watch.
Compare “Perfect Match” (Dexter the Robot etc.) with the contrived, sleazy “The Bachelor”, e.g.

  9. I was going to watch Fry’s Planet Word on ABC iView. Could find it this morning, so I contact Aunty. Turns out it won’t be on iView. I’m so used to everything being on iView, I didn’t even think about taping it.

Maybe ABC need a logo to show something isn’t going to be available on iView 🙂

Todd’s show was great last night. Glad it won the demos.

  10. When Hot Seat started in April 2009, it took until August 2009 to have it’s first national win over Deal Or No Deal and was up and down against it until around 2011 when it took over. It has taken 7 until only recently to find a show to replace DOND, so I don’t think they will ditch it quickly (can see them tweaking it a little maybe).

  11. Hey David – has TEN done something to you in the last month…..A lot of negative comments from you about them recently……given you have been a good supporter of TEN in the past.

I think Revealed had all foreign stories last night…certain started with one….I am surprised it got the ratings it did – And not good for Hugh R.

    1. Nope. I’ve recently written features on The Project and This Week Live. But there are big problems going on and it’s important to discern between one’s own enjoyment and commercial realities. Revealed isn’t working in its current slot and I had previously suggested a Sunday alternative.

  12. SBS should put more faith in Thursday FC and put it on the main channel. It just gets lost on SBS2.

I was watching (in Melbourne) and really enjoyed it. Kinda has a Top Gear feel about it with the audience gathering around the studio and having the 3 main hosts.

In any case, it is great to have A-League on Free To Air this year, and this is the perfect companion program!

  13. It is a shame Geek did well in the Demos!
Was over this trashy show in the first instance!
Still don’t get how The Demos work.
But glad ABC won its time slot!

  14. Top Gear. That Jeremy Clarkson guy is offensive, off putting and arrogant. Just because it’s popular in UK doesn’t mean it’s going to work here. Channel 9 have got to get a grip and start appealing to women, in a clear, concise way. House Husbands does that, but that’s it – though I don’t watch HH, something more intelligent would lure me.

  15. Bad numbers for Top Gear considering how many ads Nine ran for the show over the past couple of weeks. Now that the episode has aired I assume that I can safely continue watching Nine without hearing Jeremy Clarkson say “I’m on a mission from God” in that annoying ad again!

  16. You are spot on, David. Revealed must go and Top Gear is a flop.

Go had really good numbers last night – both Big Bangs topped the multichannel ratings – I was surprised Survivor did not make the Digital Top 20

  17. The babes/geeks show was actually quite amusing by not taking itself too seriously. The geeks are geeked up with dodgy clothing, socks & sandals, facial hair, general grooming, but were naturally hilarious with their ‘scary’ tribal war like dance. The babes are hot and are deliberately dumbed down…..ie high heel shoes on the beach, excitedly screaming when shown the mirror and range of shampoo etc at the beach resort, and carefully edited comments. The show was just harmless fairly daft fun with hot babes. By contrast the contrived crap of The Bachelor just seems sleazy from what I have seen…imo
