How much more was Homeland timeshifted?

Timeshifted numbers for Homeland are in. So how much higher did it go?

2013-10-09_0018Last week’s season return of Homeland pulled a disappointing 445,000 viewers for TEN.

But how did it fare on Timeshifted in the 7 days that followed?

The numbers are now in. It pulled another 137,000 viewers, taking its total to 582,000 viewers.

TEN says another 151,000 video views were recorded on tenplay.com.au from September 30 to October 6.

While it all sounds like an improvement, and it is, the problem is also that everything is proportionate, with other networks also seeing lifts in their programming.

For instance The Blacklist premiered with 1.6m viewers for Seven. It picked up another 210,000 viewers, bringing its total to 1.8m viewers, just over 3 times the audience for Homeland.

This week it was 433,000 viewers -without the Live streaming on offer first.

Homeland may not be matching its first scintillating season, but it’s still one of TEN’s best shows.

  1. @pertinax et al……and just to book end my first comment, the reason ratings are down is because the show, tension and plot are unsustainable beyond a couple of series. And!!!! sick of having another slightly mad character as the lead…..

Homeland rated 1m for the first season when it was shown 5 months behind the US.

When it 2 weeks and 1 week behind the US (the margin made no difference) for S2 it averaged 614k for the season, down 400k viewers.

Fast-tracked the same day this season it is rating 440k down another 150k.

The number of people who will illegally download Homeland rather than watch it live because it is shown after it airs in the US is much, much smaller than number of people who aren’t watching it because they are watching The X Factor/The Blacklist and from next week TBBT or Supernatural.

But Ten can’t move it because they made a bid deal out of promising to show it on Mondays a few hours after it aired in the US.

  3. It didn’t help that the lead actor was absent from the show, for the first 2 eps. I checked out the first ep. and found it very boring without him.

  4. @Jason If it’s shown on Sunday there would be backlash and there would be viewers watching it illegally. It was shown 2 weeks then later six days behind the US last year for series 2 because Ten were being stubborn and said they had to show it on Sunday because it was shown on Sunday nights in January to March (series 1).

I enjoyed Homeland but I lost interest in it because I just stopped watching it on Sundays and I didn’t have time to watch the PVR recordings.

  5. @Kirk – So our program schedules are now being dictated by the US. Of course TEN can run it on Sunday night. There’s nothing in their contract that says they have to run it on Monday.

  6. The Americans, The Good Wife, Ripper Street and Friday Night Lights are all better than S2 & 3 of Homeland.

Sleep Hollow has better overnights than any of them and a younger audience and makes more money. Under the Dome had double its overnights.

  7. In America ratings are still very strong, the show is not the problem. This is just what happens when a network try’s to fasttrack while ignoring everything else they know about good scheduling.

I find those tenplay figures very hard to believe.

  8. Homeland might be one of Ten’s best shows but with ratings like these it’ll be on One very very soon.

Sigh – I’m becoming a broken record when I once again mention how bad Ten’s brand new management are.

They just replaced bad with bad.

Oh well – they are at least spending millions on making sure their new breakfast program is going to sparkle.

  9. @Pertinax – With Timeshifting Oztam only count the ratings for the people who watch and do not fast-forward through ads, so TEN can still say to advertisers the ads are being seen.

    From: oztam.com.au/timeshiftviewing.aspx

“Only standard speed (normal) playback is included in OzTAM viewing figures; fast-forwarded material is not counted, nor is material that has been recorded but not actually viewed (played back).”

  10. Jezza is spot on. Like Revenge, this series only had two seasons in it. How many times can you see the agent locked up in a nut house? And rolling your eyes is what passes for being a little bit crazy? No doubt she’ll be back to continue her duties (as if). Superb acting and storylines, not.

  11. And what does Ten get from all this timeshifting?

In the US the studios formed Hulu and at least spread the costs and recouped some money from their cannibalising of live TV viewing.

  12. Then they repeat it again on Fridays, when usually there’s nothing worthwhile elsewhere, but have never seen a promo for the repeat. Do they wait until next Monday to add on Friday’s figure? Then again, isn’t The Black List repeated too?

  13. I think taking it off Sunday was a mistake. It feels odd on a Monday night. I do appreciate that Ten were trying to do the right thing. We ask for fast tracking, and they delivered.
It also offered them a chance to lift Monday nights, instead of lumping all their successful shows onto one night. But it has always been a Sunday night show, and people like routine.
Also putting a show in it’s third season up against one of the biggest shiny new shows in ‘The Blacklist’ was rather foolish, especially with such a huge lead-in from ‘X-factor’.
It would no doubt have performed better after ‘Elementary’ on Sunday.
If they want to save one of their biggest assets, they need to do something about it quick. Because it will only continue to waste away in this timeslot. Personally, I would watch ‘Homeland’ no matter what night it was on, but it obviously is not working here.

  14. Homeland was never going to sustain much of an audience beyond a 2nd series. The original tension evaporates and we get stuck with yet another mad everyday bipolar american. Lets face it the country is full of them and they are either tragically shooting their own citizens or attempting to bring the world economy to a grinding halt…
Homeland lost its mojo last season for me…
