Year of the Doctor

Did you get up early to join in the fun of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who?

2013-11-24_0113It’s finally here.

The world marks 50 years of Doctor Who with The Day of the Doctor starring Matt Smith, David Tennant, John Hurt, Billie Piper, Jemma Redgrave and Joanna Page.

If you got up early to watch this (or maybe stayed up all night in Perth?) I’d be keen to hear about it. Whereabouts in Australia did you watch? Alone or with friends? Were you in bed or were you up wearing your favourite Dr Who t-shirt and scarf?

Or are you off to the 3D cinema screening like I am?

And what did you think of the episode -try to avoid specific Spoilers for those who will watch the 7:30 broadcast.

Replay 7:30pm tonight on ABC1 followed by An Adventure in Space and Time.

  1. I stayed up and ended up watching it with someone. I absolutely loved it. I do want to thank the BBC and ABC for making it and showing it. I loved that it was shown simultaneously around the world. Just brilliant. I had no problems with the first showing and was happy with it.

As for what was shown. I thought it an amazing, funny at times, as well as enjoyable adventure. It threatened to be something else but had the right touch. Plus I too loved the bit with the Curator. I guessed who it would be before he appeared. I can’t say more even for the future if someone hasn’t seen it yet. Again thank you to everyone involved in bringing it to life and putting it on TV.

  2. Caught the 7:30pm screening on ABC1, and was not disappointed. Action from go to whoa, twists and turns, and the climax, oh (*speechless*)!

So much was slammed into the time available it could have been made a little longer, but it doesn’t matter.

I hope Doctor Who fans enjoyed, i certainly did.

  3. I was up early to watch it in my PJs with a cup of tea, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Even better than the anniversary special was Peter Davidson, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy’s 30min short called ‘The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot’. Its definitely worth the effort to google it and watch.

  4. Mind blowingly good!! There were several gasps from the audience in the cinema throughout the show/film and cheers and woohoos as multiple beloved characters popped up. The entire audience erupted with applause at the end. A brilliant way to commemorate the anniversary!

  5. I got up early with my girlfriend ,we loved it specially, tom baker at the end was a bit confused about john hurt was he regenerating into the new doc or is matt doing that at xmas time ?not sure about billy piper would have loved her to come back as her character not the wolf or what ever she was looking forward to the tel-movie after the repeat

  6. Watched it alone in bed, will watch again tonight with rest of family. Loved it. Possibly the best piece of Television ever produced. Ever! Moffat has surpassed himself. And that part where the….(Spoilers!)…with the…(Spoilers!)…and the (Insert River Song Quote here.) made me laugh so hard. Gee, it’s hard to write a review without making mention of what happened.

  7. I PVRd this and watched it at 8:30am while having breakfast. Was really impressed with this, a lot better than I expected considering how dull the last couple of seasons have been with the exception of one or two good eps.

  8. Yes, set the alarm and got up early. Enjoyed it immensely! Doctor Who has become one of those shows that some fans over analyse every aspect of an episode to within an inch of it’s life.
Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Geronimo!!

  9. We are in Perth so it was an early start. Up at 3:30am so we had time to make a cup of tea and be ready to watch. Whole family and 1 boyfriend made it, 1 family member sent on his way to cycling race at 4:45am with a chorus of bye, good luck and shhhhhh! Great episode. We already have some fav one liners. Topped off the morning with Darlek shaped pancakes (blueberry and strawberries to make dots and lines)

  10. Well I watched it at home, by myself, whilst everyone else was asleep. At the same time I was on the computer with my friend in the U.S. I loved it. I loved all return of our favourites and especially loved the last shot.

  11. I live in Sydney and I watched The Day of the Doctor in ABC this morning with my son in our pyjamas. We are also going to 3D cinema screening at mid day where he will dress up. Loved it and not going to say anything as it would be spoilers (and there are enough around) except don’t miss it.

  12. Moffat’s Sherlockian witty dialogue, cinema quality production values and a final surprise guest appearance (not Eccleston). Bloody brilliant.
“An Adventure in Space and Time” is also compulsory viewing, delightful tribute/docudrama plus Jessica Raine from “Call the Midwife” as Verity Lambert.

  13. I got up early to watch it – watched it alone as hubby is not a Whovian. I loved it! The story was excellent, having three doctors together was incredible and I adored John Hurt’s Doctor. But the big thing for me was that ending – amazing! Without giving spoilers, that ending blew me away, I’m so glad I didn’t know that was happening. Fantastic episode!

  14. We loved it! We all got up early and sat on the couch to watch. Some great shoutouts to ALL the other doctors and loved the Curator’s appearance – picked who it was as soon as I heard the voice.

Have seen some say they didn’t think it lived up to the hype but I’m not sure what they were expecting. It was a great mix of drama and comedy and even my kids, who are just starting to get into Who, enjoyed it.

It gives some good hints as to the likely direction of the Xmas special and the next series. It also managed to tie up some loose ends without reducing everything from Chris Eccleston up to now as “just a dream”. Very smartly done.

Will definitely be watching again tonight.

  15. I got up early but decided that I’d rather go for a walk and read the paper while enjoying a crumpet.

The idea of sitting down after dinner tonight with a nice cup of tea and watching some interesting TV live on a Sunday night appealed.

I can’t remember can’t remember the last time I did that. These days I usually am watching something on the DVD while watching for a show that starts at 8:50pm.
