Seven News yesterday introduced a new theme for its bulletins around the country, presumably as part of its push to refresh the brand.

While we’re on the subject here are some of the network’s former news themes.

A remixed version of The Mission by John Williams, used in various versions since 1999.

The news theme for Seven National News in Melbourne and Adelaide and for radio station 3DB from 1970-1983.

  1. It sound a lot like that News Hour Show on SBS. You know they are worried when they change the News theme that you wouldn’t even play at a funeral. I am sorry but it really does suck.

  2. I know it’s only a bit of “music” and not the end of the world, but I think the new tune is just bad and not suited to a news program. To me, the news is a serious show & needs serious music to get people’s attention. When I sit down to watch the news now, it just seems like I’m about to watch a soapie. Why change what ain’t broke?!?

    Channel 7, turn the bloody music down, and let people speak, so we can hear what they are saying.

    The Music is vomit atrocious rubbish, turn it down.

  4. I’m glad that at Sunny raised the only issue that really matters. Commercial TV news is rather like those popular cola drinks; all about branding and creating an image around a fizzy and sugary product with very little substance, with the added risk that too much of it can be bad for you!

  5. They may as well have gone with the original Today Tonight theme – Does anyone remember the “funeral music” one, it actually kinda grew on me – can’t find it anywhere on Youtube 🙁

  6. Awful! Somebody probably got paid a lot of money for that and several high-level execs probably approved it. Goodbye Seven News. Your race is sadly over.

    A reworking/modernisation of The Mission would have been much more suitable.

  8. I have been watching 7 News since I was at primary school. I’m now 29. The Mission has been used by 7 since since 1988 with the original and two main reincarnations, the first in mid 1999 and the second around 2004/5. The Mission is a strong news theme and has a long association with 7’s news services and its regional affiliates. The new theme is weak and old fashioned and doesn’t work with the current feel and presentation of their news. It would be more suited to a world news service or an investigative program. They would have been better using the original Mission theme which was re-recorded digitally in recent years by John Williams and still used by NBC Nightly News. And why introduce a new news theme without making major changes to graphics, sets and even personnel? Channel 7 please bring back the Mission and why not the Seven Nightly News brand too.

  10. Certainly a softer touch…Almost back to the Seven Nightly News feel…..which again Seven took from NBC.

    Personally I like the 80’s Brisbane there….sure its old but uplifting and not over dramatic.

  12. Who cares about a news theme anyway. It’s the news content and how it is presented that counts. That’s why I generally never watch 7,9 or 10 news. ABC and SBS are clear leaders in news content and presentation.

  18. Whoever came up with it needs sacking. The new theme is horrible. They could have come up with much better. Makes me wonder why they changed it though. Did the rights of the mission expire?

  25. The song ‘the mission ‘ has been used for seven news for more than 10 years. Really strange why this song has changed. Seven news has changed more with logo. A few people might want to switch over to ABC news instead.
