PM works the small screen

Two shows in one day for PM Tony Abbott. Was it really so spontaneous?

wakeuptaPrime Minister Tony Abbott was busy yesterday, fronting up on two shows, Wake Up and Nine’s coverage of the Ashes.

First he was ‘surprised’ by Natarsha Belling in an unscheduled and shirtless interview while surfing at Queenscliff beach.

It was a good get for the TEN brekkie show, even though he didn’t manage to drop any news of any note.

But whether it was genuinely spontaneous isn’t clear -surely his minders know what time the show broadcasts from the location. If it was anonymity he was after, Sydney has plenty of beaches without a breakfast TV show on air.

Later he was in the commentary box at the Ashes on Nine, chatting for 15 minutes.

Any suggestions where he may surface next?

  1. Good grief. Could you imagine the days, weeks and column inches of commentary dedicated to this interview if it had been Julia Gillard in a swimsuit at the beach? I shudder to think. Good to see the Australian media continues their double standards (not you David, of course).

  2. @Bass_A – “Same as Julia Gillard not appearing on Neil Mitchell or Bolt”.
Kevin Rudd did, but Abbott still won’t appear on Q&A.
The world laughs at Putin for his unstatesman-like antics. Same as, same as.
Hope he can swim better than he can fillet fish, lay bricks or ad lib (“Bad bosses, like bad fathers and husbands, should be tolerated because they do more good than harm”) e.g.
Maybe he was looking for Harold Holt.

  3. This man is our Prime Minister, (God Forbid) Surely he could have the decency to say I will not do an interview looking like a clown. He doesn’t need to try to look like that anyway. He is the PM of Australia for heavens sake. Can you see the US President, Prime Ministers of New Zealand or Britain doing that. This man is another Putin through and through with know respect for the high office of the land, PM of Australia. What are his minders doing, or is that someone else we are paying for not doing their job. The sooner this clown is off our screens the better. Lets get dignity back for our PMs. And Channel 10 have respect for the office, you have lost me, not that I ever watched you anyway.

  4. Well for the cricket usually Cricket Australia traditionally have a VIP luncheon function on Day 1 of the Sydney Test, so no surprise Tony was there.

And for the Wake Up segment, Tony has been a long time member of Queenscliff SLSC. If he wanted serenity, I agree there are plenty of beaches he could have gone to.

David, what’s the gap between Studio 10 vs David/Kim vs Morning Show. I went to a taping of Studio 10 on New Year’s Day, it’s actually entertaining. Sarah Harris has been find of the year, so congrats to Rob McKnight or Adam Boland.

  5. ” New Flash” David Knox is definitely on his Hiatus or has he just given me a belated Xmas gift?

So not to push my luck to far, but as for his next appearances, I would not have a clue? other than that they will probably be in multiples of two, simply because of his attitude towards us voters and the media in general, where he is now proving that he has two faces, dependant entirely on the promise, venue or interviewer, as he mumbles something about promises he made, meant to make or of some who had hoped he had made??
I wonder how long before the vested interests who got him where he is today slowly change sides(again), taking notice of the growing unpopularity of their man and his government, and this before his yet to come nasty surprises,.
Could there even be an appearance of a nick name for himself, much like his of ” Electricity Bill “(Shorten), such as “Two Faced…

  6. @oztvheritage – Studio 10 is averaging around 65,000 and climbing, for Christmas Day it got I think 85,000 while Wake Up got good figures yesterday apparently according to Adam Boland’s twitter account.

  7. @Bass A
No-one here is claiming to be an expert, they’re merely claiming to be of a different opinion (and that’s all they are, opinions) to you.
If you don’t wish to read the “experts”, don’t read the comments. Pretty simple!

  8. @ maxxdude…ROTFLMBO!!….
No one ‘catches’ a PM by surprise…
Is he trying to emulate another world leader…with his bare chest and sporting achievements?

  9. I totally agree with you David..Kathy Griffin would be the best to interview him…..also Joan Rivers on Fashion Police would be wonderful considering the outfit (or lack of) he is wearing. Is it me or does it look like Abbott shaves his hair on his chest ( the hair finishes in such a straight line) so as it doesn’t extend to his shoulders and deltoid muscle on the upper arm?

  10. A regular spot on the 7:30 Report act would be good – actually being a leader and answering questions about his plans for the country. No, perhaps not – I think he would find that job just a tad too rigorous – best he sticks to being a “good bloke”, surfing, running, cricket commentary, answering Andrew Bolt’s probing questions etc – he can’t do much harm that way.

  11. I want him to be like Mick Molloy in the Late Show days, just imagine, Kylie & Larry are doing “Flashback Friday” (I don’t know, perhaps they interview Bob La Castra from Wombat) when suddenly, our PM runs out in a pair of leopard print bog catchers & jumps up & down on their couch then leaves again
