2014-02-10_0937The numbers are in.

INXS has thumped Schapelle.

Seven’s miniseries scored an excellent 1.97m viewers last night, well in front of Nine’s Schapelle telemovie on 1.02m viewers. While INXS managed #1 ranking for the night, Schapelle had to settle for #7, outrated by other titles including Sunday Night, Seven and Nine News and The Block.

Seven won the night with a 37.6% share over Nine’s 27.0%. TEN was 20.5%, ABC 11.9% and SBS 3.1%.

The ratings battle left others in its wake. ABC drama Rake was pushed down to 645,000 viewers.

TEN’s rebooted Reality series So You Think You Can Dance Australia was rejected at just 466,000 viewers, thrashed by My Kitchen Rules (1.64m) and The Block (1.27m). But TEN did have better fortunes with its Sochi coverage.

The rest of the ratings results are:

Seven scored with Sunday Night (1.8m), Seven News (1.29m) and Tricked (433,000).

Nine News was 1.22m for Nine then 60 Minutes (866,000) and Bali: The Dark Side of Paradise (600,000).

A single Winter Olympics event, the Women’s Snowboard Slopefest final, pulled 996,000. TEN Eyewitness News was 587,000.  Other Sochi coverage was 454,000 for evening and 440,000 for afternoon.

ABC News (790,000) was best for ABC1 then David Attenborough: Rise of the Animals (752,000).

On SBS ONE it was World News Australia (202,000) and Archeology: A Secret History (200,000).

Much of ONE’s Sochi coverage eclipsed the audience on TEN with early evening (494,000) and afternoon (492,000). The channel did well at a 7.2% share.

  1. It is so frustrating watching Channel 10 program. SYTYCD should never have been up against MKR and the Block. Ten should learn that they aren’t in the big league anymore and should look at being a point of difference meaning inventive scheduling. I thought SYTYCD was well filmed and had sharp story telling. Those that say they wont be back after watching one episode should really revisit.

I do agree that the Never Tear Us Apart wasn’t as sharp as it should have been. I was very impressed with Damon Herriman, Luke Arnold and Andrew Ryan played a spot on Andrew Farriss. Yes he was a misery guts around that time. Props to Samantha Jade for her Kylie performance.

  2. I know nine had no winners, but at least what they put on prevented MKR and INXS from cracking over 2 million viewers, which probably would’ve happened to both.
So it’s not a dumb decision.
It takes time for a rival to close a gap on a show like MKR.
Unless the show is The Voice, in which case you’re screwed lol.

  3. Wow I was expecting the numbers between Schapelle and INXS to be a lot closer than that… But goes to show they should’ve left it the original timeslot.

I thought Schapelle was well done. I’m sure INXS will be repeated through the week, I’ll catch it then.

  4. I don’t think it’s a case of quality of Channel 10 shows, it’s just simply that 7 and 9 have the monopoly over them with their powerhouse reality series. Perhaps 10 should take a note from their own past and move SYTYCDA away from such major competition like they did with The Bachelor.

Wednesday and Thursday night airings for the show didn’t work years ago, however, who says it can’t work now in todays market, especially when it’s away from The Block and MKR?

  5. I agree Nine only has it’s self to blame for the last minutes change putting Schapelle on last night. I guess they still haven’t learnt a thing. I ended up recording Nine and Seven and watching the ABC and SBS.

  6. @Cronker spot on could not have said it better… the only thing that i would add… was that the music made what it was as well….. the show sent me googling vision of the last days before Michael passed…. as for Schappelle… umm it just felt like i was watching one really long news story… for me it didnt really add much… although again the performances of actors in both shows were great… and the casting in the title roles was superb for both

  7. It is a shame that SYTYCD Lost out badly to the 7 & 9 juggernauts. Maybe the wrong time to launch, yet any other time of year would have been tough competition for 10.
I hope they keep it going, it is a good genre and different to anything else. Shame ppl like the bitchiness of MKR and Block! Neither interest me!

  8. Proof that audiences want their sports in HD when given the option

On friday night ONE showed the BBL final (or the last 3-5 overs of the final innings) in HD and it looked terrific – if only we had that the whole season

  9. Sucks to hear SYTYCD didn’t rate. Unfortunately I watched The Block as I’m already invested and am needing to catch up on SYTYCD. On a side note, the coverage of the Women’s Snowboard SlopeStyle was awesome, which even though our Aussie Torah didn’t even place the competition was insane! Plus it was simulcast on One which takes the total audience to like 1.2m! TEN deserve a medal for their coverage!

  10. Ouch for SYTYCD, but the Winter Olympics held up well.
Nine paid the price for their childish antic. Hopefully the media can also take note and stop chasing Corby. Many people are sick of hearing her.

  11. I noticed that SYTYCD launched even lower ythan Everybody Dance Now, that is even more embarrassing than Nine’s scheduling of Shapelle. INXS did fantastic numbers, very well done to Seven, but I did however think the production was pretty slow and rather hokey.

  12. I’ve heard a lot of people complaining they didn’t know Schapelle had moved from Monday night.

Smartest thing Nine could do is rerun it tonight when people were expecting it to be on.

  13. It’s reassuring to see an intelligently conceived strategy, a well produced drama and effective promotion hit the jackpot on Sunday night for Seven – indeed next week may rate higher. It’s probably time Nine appointed a real Head of Drama to ensure some quality control over their output – Michael Healy may have more moves than a chess-playing octopus but he doesn’t “get” why some dramas work and others don’t. This result will genuinely puzzle him.

  14. I thought INXS was good, but flawed. There were a lot of contrivances in the plotting, it felt very rushed and there wasn’t much to tell me the motivations of the lead characters.
Yes, we were told that Hutchence loved sex, drugs and rock n roll. No surprise there. We found put that Andrew Farriss is a reluctant genius. Ho hum. But why. What made them like that? The flashbacks didn’t really add much either.
Being said, the production values were great and the performances by the cast were good. Hope the second installment fires a bit more brightly.

  15. Thought Dance may manage around 600k but 466k gosh that’s bad for a premier.
INXS: Never Tear Us Apart was captivating viewing so it definitely deserves the results. The tweets about Shapelle were pretty hilarious from what I read. Nine really were stupid to change the screening for Shapelle cos if it was on tonight like originally planned I would’ve actually watched it so basically Nine shot themselves in the foot.

  16. SYTYCD premiered almost 150k below Everybody Dance Now’s premiere. Commonly regarded as the biggest flop of all time. SYTYCD will give it a run for its money, everyone I’ve spoken to that watched it say they won’t be back, and some of those people were really excited for it.

  17. I wonder if anyone at Nine will be clearing their desks out as we speak? Surely 9 will repeat it tonight – it’ll prob do even better without the competition. A lot of people would have liked to watch both.

  18. I think it was poor timing by Nein to screen Schapelle this weekend as we were all well and truly over hearing her name given all the disgusting TV media behaviour and ‘excessive’ coverage on Friday evening.

The INXS show was actually much better than I expected.

Meanwhile, the Gold medal for worst programming decision of 2014 has already been won by TEN for putting SYTYCD again MKR & The Block (not that I watch any of that trash). I expect TEN to bump it immediately.

On the other hand, well done to ONE for the impressive Sochi coverage in “HD”.

Not much on tonight so it’s last night’s Rake via PVR.

  19. I want channel 10 to succeed, I really do but they have to be kidding themselves if they thought SYTYCD would a manage to sway any viewers away from MKR. Seriously.

  20. Sucko Nine – most of us could have predicted a right royal thumping. Serves ’em right for changing the timeslot at the last minute.

Watch out for a number of repeats.
