Block on high, but TEN hits new low.

Ratings: While Reality still rules, TEN's primary channel sinks to 5.9% -its lowest survey share since OzTAM ratings began.

EP44 Final 1 001Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse for Channel TEN, it’s primary channel hits another iceberg.

TEN’s primary channel sank to a 5.9% share last night, the lowest survey share since the start of OzTAM ratings in 2001.

Again the channel could not manage 500,000 viewers with TEN Eyewitness News best at 473,000 viewers. Elementary was 380,000, The Graham Norton Show was 244,000. An empty war-chest decision to play a repeat Narnia movie at 6:30pm got what it deserved -just 226,000. Are You Paying Attention? is not helping at just 189,000.

The saving grace for TEN was the FIA Formula One, at 375,000 it helped push ONE to a 5.0% channel share and kept the network in double figures and only just above the preceding week.

Once again it was reality shows that hogged the night with The Block‘s room reveal again defeating My Kitchen Rules.

Nine network share was 35.3% then Seven 33.0%, ABC 15.2%, TEN 12.5% and SBS 4.0%.

The Block‘s 1.73m was its second best numbers this season, together with 60 Minutes (1.42m) they powered Nine to a win, followed by Nine News (1.26m), Fat Tony and Co. (1.04m in 5 cities / 547,000 in 3 cities). A Person of Interest repeat was 281,000.

My Kitchen Rules was no pushover at a strong 1.57m viewers for Seven then Seven News (1.33m) and Sunday Night (1.19m). Downton Abbey won its timeslot at 1.1m viewers. A Resurrection replay was 297,000.

ABC News (828,000) may have topped ABC1 but the season finale of Rake finished strong on 759,000. Next were Ice Age Giants (656,000) and Compass (423,000). Waking the Dead was just 185,000.

SBS ONE had a tough night with SBS World News (185,000), Himmler and the Holy Grail (182,000), Dirty Business (138,000) and How to Build a Bionic Man (117,000).

OzTAM Overnights: Sunday 30 2014

  1. Having F1 on ONE is much better than being on TEN as it is in HD. Just because TEN has no programming for Sunday night, doesn’t mean the F1 should be on TEN.

Why even suggest losing one of the few sporting events we get to see in HD on FTA TV!

As for TEN, why not put Biggest Loser back on Sunday nights? Its just not the same having the weigh ins and eliminations on Tuesdays. Guessing damaged is well and truly done there for that show now – should never have moved from Sunday!

  2. Agree with others comments that it is unacceptable that Nine keep cutting the room reveal episode of The Block over two nights. Also agree that it was unacceptable for both cast and crew of The Block to film in conditions which are unacceptable. If they wanted to film then and there, fine, go down to one of the sponsor stores and buy some fans (surely The Good Guys would like one more plug before the season finishes). In regards to TEN, well what is there to say that hasn’t already been said – a replay movie dies, HYBPA is still bombing, and Elementary deserves a better lead in. When does Beverly come off maternity leave?

  3. Ten have to stop being such stubborn mules and launch Masterchef at 7pm weeknights.
It is the only chance that show will have to even mildly succeed.

  4. I’d be interested to find out how well Graham Norton rated when his show was on the ABC.

Is it doing better or worse now it’s on Ten?

  5. Seeing that during this entire series there has been seemingly endless cooler hours of after sunset filming, and surely just one more cooler after dark shoot would not have blown the budget?

So with this in mind, was it any wonder that what we saw what we did last night, in that it was just one network competing with another network, where the usual mind games of minutes of over runs, morphed into a day’s over run.

Any wonder the Block Heads exhibited such extreme distress, because the only fan I could see on site/set, was the one that was actually fanning the dying flames of the 4 night ratings wins of previous reveals, and produces blatantly trying to extend that to 6 after competing with MKR, by ending the last reveal on a monday.

  6. I don’t think ten will ever put F1 in primetime Sunday nights just like seven wont put AFL on primetime Friday nights in NSW & QLD. Surely live sport would rate better than re-run movies, but I’m yet to see a programming exec agree with that hypothesis.

  7. What a terribly sad result for TEN who just can’t catch a break. Moving Dance to Thursday nights has not only been a failure, but has ironically had a detrimental affect on Sunday nights, achieving the lowest score of all time – something that would not have happened if they didn’t switch SYTYCD to Thursdays – arguably the worst night outside of Friday & Saturday. Also, for the record, Ten never ever did this badly under David Mott. Think about that Ten!

  8. Ten are very complacent. They don’t seem to have any new content, and have put all their eggs in the SYTYCDA basket. Shows like Secrets and Lies and Puberty Blues were held over from last year. All their other shows are just returning shows. They really need to start producing new content. Airing a repeat movie on the main channel on a Sunday night these days is simply unacceptable.

  9. Mr. J: “it is a completely reasonable expectation for someone to stand still while indoors.”

You neglected to mention the hard days work they had just completed on a construction site.

  10. @Tyler – Agreed Not good for the crew either.

@Mr-J – Most of Melbourne was not standing under studio lights in a non air-conditioned space.

40 degrees is the limit of safe working conditions. If it’s 44 degree and your under lights it’s closer to 48.

  11. No wonder TEN Eyewitness News is losing viewers on Sundays. Always watched it after Meet the Press (before News Corp took over producing it & ruined it) but now if you happen to switch on 5 minutes early you cop Andrew Bolt “without fear or favour”. Cringeworthy. Enough to make anyone with a modicum of intelligence switch off again. If TEN is preparing its news department for a full takeover by News Corp so be it. Just be prepared to lose even more viewers.

  12. puh-lease, the world doesn’t stop because it is hot. the rest of melbourne was at work during the heatwave. there were people playing 5 set tennis matches in direct outdoor sunlight. it is a completely reasonable expectation for someone to stand still while indoors.

  13. Ch10 missed a trick. The F1 would have easily attracted another 300k on Narnia numbers. Understandably, networks want to preserve their prime time viewers but when there is a movie rerun in the slot it makes no sense at all. Baffling decisions going on over there at TEN HQ.

  14. What is incredibly sad is that TEN is not reacting to these woeful figures – they still play HYBPA despite constant low figures – Narnia was the 3rd installment and definitely not the best of the films, (and by the way was not a new film either, so people have either downloaded it or borrowed it at the video store over the years). This sunk everything else for the evening.

Whats your logic TEN playing these programs without at least giving a crack to something else?

  15. I do keep msuggesting that ch10 put some weight behind F1. A simulcast would have boosted their numbers last night. It is one thing that works for them and they do it well with a combo of local representatives and experienced international commentators. C’mon folks….move quickly….

  16. It doesn’t make sense to me that the producers wouldn’t wait a day to film the room reveal, when the weather had cooled down? The show is filmed in advance!

It looks as if they wanted someone to faint or just add to the drama. Also, they should advertise a 1/2 room reveal if they’re not going to even show one of the couples apartments until Monday.

  17. @billy C, it amazes me that the concern is always for those on camera. All they do is stand there. The crew are in exactly the same conditions but they are actually working and doing physical things in those conditions. If the crew can tough it out then surely the on camera people can as well.

  18. I watched the block last night. I couldn’t believe 9 would film people under those conditions. I imagine If they were actors the shoot would have been shut down under MEAA rules. Why should normal people not receive the same conditions as actors if they are performing in a studio environment?
