Billboard Music Awards: Michael Jackson hologram vs 5 Seconds of Summer

Video: Jacko in a hologram or Sydney teens doing the real thang? You decide.

5sos.jpgMichael Jackson “performed” at the Billboard Music Awards in Los Angeles today, thanks to some whiz-bang hologram technology.

But Sydney teens 5 Seconds of Summer stumped up with an in the flesh performance of “She Looks So Perfect” that went down a treat.

The pop rock band only last week performed on Sunrise and today were on stage in front of US music industry elite.

Amongst the many musical acts, Ricky Martin also performed “Vida.”

But it was the Jackson hologram that will attract the most attention, with possible divisions over whether it worked or not.

“This magic is something that you have to see for yourself,” said host Ludacris.

“As you’ve never seen him before, everybody, Live from the MGM Grand, Michael Jackson.”

But he neglected to include the word “the late.”

mja3.jpgJackson was seen performing Slave to the Rhythm surrounded by dancers, some of whom were live in the foreground. At first things were a little shaky, literally, and Jacko seemed to glow just a bit too much. But with some live pyro effects it was a clever recreation.

It looked as if there was a disconnect in the room. While some of the audience were intrigued by the whole concept, perhaps more for the technology than the performance, others were not motivated to give a standing ovation to such an un-real first.

Maybe they were all feeling like their careers were on the line. Who needs live performers, right?

  1. Gotta do something to shift units of that new album.

    Flogging a …..

And not new either; Tupac at Coachella; and even a ‘rotoscoped’ Elvis on American Idol.

  2. I think the MJ performance showed that we _do_ need live performers – it was kind of upsetting what they did. Trying to recreate someone so unique with $$$ and CGI was never going to work.
