Ryan wins Big Brother 2014

Under-the-radar housemate Ryan has won Big Brother 2014.

ryn14Under-the-radar housemate Ryan has won Big Brother 2014.

The 26 year old graphic designer from Sydney defeated Travis to take out the $200,000 prize, with his laid-back style winning him plenty of fans.

“It’s been such a journey. I can’t even describe what the feeling is,” he said.

“I just want to say thanks. Non of this would be possible without you guys voting.

“It’s definitely going to change my life.”

“Massiv” Travis took second place with his larrikin personality, rewarded with $10,000.

Both males entered the house together at the season launch.

20 year old Queenslander Skye, widely regarded as the series favourite, took third place with a $5000 prize.

The evening included all 22 housemates reunited, with plenty of highlights packages looking back at the romances, conflicts and challenges that spanned the 80 day season. It also included the annual news wrap and video messages from former favourites Chrissie Swan, Reggie Bird, Ryan Fitzgerald, Tim Dormer and Ben Norris.

But while the 11th season has been the lowest rating so far for Nine, it still scored in the younger demographics.

While not formally announcing a return season, Nine is inviting future housemates to register their interest online.

“I’m Sonia Kruger, it’s time to go…. have a baby…. and from everyone here at Big Brother thank you and goodnight.”

  1. An indifferent inoffensive winner to a very pedestrian series of a poor quality very tired looking cheap manufactured reality show watched by a record low audience for the franchise sceened on a soon to be defunct format.

  2. I voted for Ryan (my only vote for the year). While he was ‘blanded’ than the Travis and Skye, he stuck to the spirit of the game. We all know how selective the editing of each episode can be, especially given there were only four episodes each week.

  3. Another fan shocked at the outcome. Honestly, I didn’t care after Tuesday night, when I was hoping either Priya or Penny would come away with the prize. We half-heartedly switched to backing Travis, but had been wanting Ryan to be shown the door since day dot. He’s probably a decent bloke, but came across as really bland. Did nothing to actually earn the money as far as I was concerned. Really hard to figure out after Tim and Ben in the last years were so dynamic and interesting. If we all weren’t voting for Ryan, who was? Bueller?

  4. Agree with @Michael Young.
Would have much preferred Travvy to win.
That would have been awesomely “massiiivv”.
Didn’t like him at first but he grew on me over time.
I could imagine he would be annoying to live with but he seemed to have a big heart and was so cheerful and exuberant, really making the most of his time in the house
At least he wasn’t malicious and didn’t bitch and moan and cause drama out of nothing, like some others in there.
Agree that Ryan was pretty beige and boring.
As others have said, guess he was a fitting winner for a very beige and boring BB this year.

Thank god at least that Skye didn’t win.

  5. The turning point for me with travis, was the way he embraced Ben from the 2013 season. He displayed much heart and soul and a sweetness that kept coming through. He may be a rough diamond, but he was infinitely more watchable than Ryan.

  6. Despite the two other recent winners being divisive personalities, Ryan reminded me of the two earliest winners on Ten. They were both middle of the road, under the radar blokes who seemed to hit the right notes with the voting audience. Although i thought he was initially just a loud, uneducated yobbo; Travis really grew on me, and I thought he would be a more deserving winner.

  7. I’m surprised! I thought it would be the wonderful Travis. 🙁 But I never vote anyway.
Sadly, Ryan is just so “beige” so I guess Australia has becoming a very middle-of-the-road country?

  8. @chivasssimo – it’s closer to 29¢ if we use the main prize and main show numbers (compare with $1.59 for The Biggest Loser, sorry, The Big Adventure). Obviously, neither of these calculations take into account any of the other costs of either series.

  9. Ryan winning tops off a big brother season that had no direction.
If he wasn’t on the show, nothing would be different. He’s probably a decent guy, we don’t really know, but he didn’t really add or do anything.
People that cruise through Big Brother, never putting themselves out there. Never really getting any scrutiny on themselves or what they are doing in the house should not win.
I can’t think of one storyline or interesting thing that happened because of him. Apparently BB editors couldn’t either based on the video packages last night. He was just their and got more airtime as people left.
Maybe it’s a good strategy but this is not what BB should be about and it is not entertaining. Hence it caps off a season that lacked direction and the core concept of BB. Someone wins that had no impact on the season and cruised through as if it was a game show. Not reality TV putting…

  10. Completely agree with the general sentiment – a really boring winner. I really didn’t even notice him until the last two weeks. While I didn’t like Skye and was glad she didn’t win – I would have preferred her to win over him. I don’t get it. Who was voting for him? He was so dull!!

  11. I honestly didnt think Ryan would have lasted so long. I thought one of the more polarising housemates would have won, but perhaps this could be attributed to lower ratings and thus less enthusiastic voters.

On the plus side, I liked the format of having the HMs on stage throughout the show and Ryan seems like a nice genuine guy.

And of course very clever of Nine to deflect those inevitable fan renewal questions by opening registrations of interest.

  12. I’m an out and proud Big Brother watcher but have to say I was stunned Ryan won this series. I can’t think of anything he did that was worth watching except for appearing as a frozen chicken and even that was mediocre to the extreme. You’d never have known the guy was there apart from that.
If the series is to survive producers need to ignore perfect teeth and good bodies and cast real people with real stories. The audience like to see themselves reflected back at them. It’s reality TV…keep it “real” and give the audience hope that it could be anyone of them up there in the spotlight.
Turn the cameras around on the audience at the live nights and cast those sort of people. Ratings will follow.

  13. Pretty dissapointed to be honest. Watched every episode faithfully since launch night and while Ryan wasn’t a bad housemate, Travis and Skye were far more deserving winners! I’m sorry to say but Australia got it wrong this time. It’s a boring result from a somewhat boring season of BB. Enjoyed last years season and winner far more than this years!

Now the question on everybody’s lips… Will The Show Come Back?

  14. One of the worst winners in Big Brother Australia history. How on Earth can someone who no one knew about in the first few weeks go to win? He has done absolutely nothing interestingly this series. A mediocre winner for a mediocre season.
