Sam’s plan to make TEN uber cool…

Video: Designs so sleek that TEN should hire the man behind it and give him a gig.

These mock designs for TEN are not official, but they are so good they should be.

They are the work of Aussie Sam Mularczyk who has been studying in Sweden and decided to use TEN as his subject for a university project, playing with shapes, colours, and typography -all inspired by online platforms.

Since posting them on the Media Spy bulletin board he’s been showered with praise with many saying they are so good he should be hired by TEN. And it’s not hard to see why.

While they do include some former branding (TEN ditched ‘Seriously’ some time ago), they are sleek and uber cool.

Mularczyk tells TV Tonight, “I chose to rebrand TEN as it was my favourite channel growing up, and historically their branding has been a huge inspiration to me. Their bright colours and quirky personality – plus the strides they’ve made with tenplay – lend themselves well to a digital-friendly refresh.

“I feel like most TV channels (excluding the ABC/SBS) lag behind international markets with embracing digital technologies. It was more of a question: seeing what other channels have done internationally, what would Australian TV look like with a digital-aware design language?”

That’s probably a question for TEN’s own-brand-man-turned-network-exec Russel Howcroft.

A better question would also be, when are you calling Sam to offer him a gig?

  1. This is actually a really smart and slick way of advertising- reminds me a little bit of Elevens, but with more colour and a greater social and technological aspect. Emphasising ten play is a very smart idea, hope Ten listens (as they have preciously) to the commenters on this site and follows Sam up with a job offer.

  2. i have always loved Ten’s graphics and visual design. They have always and consistently been stunning and for a long time, they were miles ahead of the competition in that regard. That said, Sam’s work is frickin awesome and modern (i might even say it surpasses Ten’s current work). Ten should definitely look at hiring him!

  3. Thanks for this wonderful article David, let me join the chorus and say Ten hire this wonderful talent. Love the look and feel of everything Sam has done.

  4. Dood haz sum mad skillz.

Russell has said much of what I was going to so I’ll just re-iterate that, while the look and style is extremely good, consistent, and cohesive, the true innovation here is the improvement in the viewer experience. The ad-timer is a nice idea and would prob work for breaks of less than 3 min. Beyond that and people are going to leave the room or change channels.

TV networks are in the business of communication but they are usually very poor at it. And they seem to treat their audiences with such contempt and disregard. Sam’s ideas would help to fix some of that.

Seven will prob hire him just to stop Ten from doing so.

  5. Apart form the beautiful design which is so great, there is actual innovation here that improves the viewer experience and builds good will between Ten and the viewer.

The song notification graphic could be used in show and in promo. How many times do you say “what is that song?”

The Now/Next/On11 graphic actually helps flow and helps keep people on One/Ten/11 suite of channels

The “Back in 2 minutes” stops you flipping the channel and feels like a polite courtosey from the network.

The “Ad 1 of 5 also is very effective and honest – and makes you keep the TV and it feels like the break willl be shorter.

And the whole ecosystem of having people watch Ten online on on air is just great.

I would expand this to One and 11 too – deifferent design, but same structure and technique.

    Ten hire this guy!

  6. In 2015, I would like to see Ten ditch the current logo (including the lowercase “ten” in the middle). Seriously. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ten changed to this new look.

    Great work, Sam.

  7. I’m all for the song notification although I guess now that my phone can listen and find it’s no longer a must have, but I love that idea. And please, please, please… yes to ad notification with the timer!!

  8. Seriously makes you wonder the people networks do sign up to create graphics – this bloke would blow them all away. Good on him, he has a bright future ahead of him. I did enjoy it, fresh and fun.

  9. This is streets ahead of anything on Australian TV. just brilliant, thoughtful design. This goes beyond being beautiful to look at – it’s extremely fuctional, clever and useful.

If Ten doesn’t hire this guy to turn his attention to Te, One and Eleven – then Nine or Seven really need to.

    Good luck Sam!

  10. How refreshing. Really excellent design and execution. The innovative use of ad timers will surely become standard in the near future – simple but so effective.

    Great find David.

  11. Great job, Sam. I was instantly engaged and want to know more.

Ten really need to get smart in 2015, embracing all their platforms and cross promoting their multichannels. Case in point: their current top drama is a resurgent Neighbours but it’s languishing in a summer return that nobody knows about. A new strategy is needed.

  12. Wow, that graphics and branding package is awesome, Ten need to get Sam onboard and use his skills. This looks way better than anything TEN has offered before.
