Breakfast TV biffo on “Exclusives”

When is an Exclusive not an exclusive? Or are networks even lying to viewers?

2015-03-09_0115

It was once a war of words on 6:30 shows, but now misuse of the word “Exclusive” has been ramped up in Breakfast television.

Nine’s Today show has recently touted “Exclusive” interviews with The Eagles, Kylie Minogue and Meghan Trainor -all on the same day interviews aired on Sunrise. TEN also had an interview with The Eagles.

Sunrise producer Michael Pell recently took to Twitter suggesting it was “a lie” to use the word when attached to content that everybody has.

TV Tonight asked Nine to please qualify what Today meant in use of the word.

Today did not respond.

  1. It doesn’t justify others doing it but Pell might want to take a look in his own backyard. The only thing exclusive about Seven’s and Nine’s “news”/current affairs/gossip is that they’re both excluded from any television in this house.

  2. I actually commented on this on Todays Facebook page after the Kylie Minogue ‘exclusive’. Today were showing an ‘exclusive’ pre recorded interview with Richard and Kylie, while if you turned over to Sunrise, Kylie was being interviewed ‘live’ by Sunrise at the same time.

  3. What is wrong with TV stations, do they think it makes any difference if it’s an exclusive or not, if you are not watching that channel how would you know , and generally speaking its common knowledge with this kind of thing across all channels when someone is coming to Australia, the only exclusive is if a particular channel has an interview with some one that no other channel has but certainly not on minor things like this. Think they need to have a re-vamp of some of the people involved, and get someone that is not so childish.

  4. The misuse of the word ‘Exclusive’ does not stop with Today on Nine. Danny Weidler misuses it all the time when covering Rugby League on Nine News

    1. As the dictionary says:
      1. A news item initially released to only one publication or broadcaster.
      2. An exclusive right or privilege, as to market a product.
These tour/movie/dvd promo pieces are neither. The interviewees are keen to appear on every TV, radio and other media outlet that will have them, giving them free publicity. The captions on the pictures acknowledges this.
But Michael, “First on Seven” across a piece carrying a TEN logo, and lifted from TEN News an hour earlier, is, um..”just a lie”.

    2. Probably, as it’s not going to be on GEM or GO! so it’s exclusive to Nine, just like when a show is a premier on GEM or GO! however has been seen on Nine before or the ABC and yadda, yadda, yadda.
