Next Block plans approved by local council

Not one, but two adjacent sites bordering Punt & Commercial Roads approved for The Block.

Stonnington Council, in inner Melbourne, has approved the latest plans by The Block to develop in South Yarra.

The thumbs up comes just days after host Scott Cam noted Melbourne councils were welcoming of the Nine reality series.

Two applications in Punt Road and Commercial Road South Yarra have been approved, understood to incorporate the former Saville Hotel.

News Corp reports the first application, on Punt Rd, includes building two four-storey dwellings, each with a rumpus/media room, single garage, terrace and four bedrooms. The site would be on the busiest road the production has ever faced.

The second proposal on Commercial Rd — which borders the Punt Rd properties — includes six apartments above a cafe. Each apartment, on its own level, would include three bedrooms, ensuite, study and north-facing terraces while the seventh level would have a theatre, bar, sunroom and gym.

Filming is expected to get underway when Reno Rumble, currently in production, concludes.

  1. Firstly there had been no murder at the Saville …an attack yes ..that was incorrect reporting …lets face it there would be many hotels in Melbourne with far more sordid tales to tell…..that said the Motel has been a godsend to many a tired traveller and many a person with someone at the Alfred Hospital. In its heyday it was very popular and many a friend had their 21st there in 70s / 80s …the overseas owners in later years were reluctant to spend any money on the Motel and eventually sold – thank goodness the Block came along – locals look forward to the Block giving the “old girl” a facelift….They will do a great job – its not quite as upmarket as Darling Street..true .. but there is a great community spirit ..fantastic transport / shopping and parkland..

    1. Not exactly an auspicious location. After last year’s disaster with the apartments on High St, Prahran, I wouldn’t be expecting amazing prices given this location. The current series filmed in far more salubrious Darling St, South Yarra is more likely to attract good prices though there are currently apartments being built everywhere in South Yarra, many with much better views than Darling St.

  2. Do 9 film every series of The Block in Melbourne so they can make those made in Melbourne ads because Victorians have an inferiority complex and won’t watch if it’s filmed in another state?

      1. There are other cities in Australia apart from Melbourne and Sydney. I don’t even know why you singled out Sydney seeing I never said it should be filmed there.
