Live sport censorship under the spotlight

No censoring for real-time broadcasts catches an AFL player off-guard.

An AFL player has apologised after viewers heard him swearing during Friday night’s broadcast, but laid the blame at Seven for not censoring him.

Fairfax reports Essendon’s Brendon Goddard called North Melbourne’s Jack Ziebell a “weak c***”s during the outburst heard on umpire microphone before apologising on ABC Radio yesterday.

“They clearly left it in there for a reason … they have a delay, they can choose what they want to show and they’ve essentially set me up … stitched me up in a way,” he said.

“You’ve got a guy in a truck with a button that can delete certain things … that’s quite frustrating.”

However a Seven source told TV Tonight there is no censoring during real-time broadcasts such as the matches on Friday and Saturday night.

Live Sport is broadcast under its own classification, similar to News and Current Affairs.

  1. Brendon should have just said that it was in the heat of the moment that’s all. Its not 7’s fault. They cant just press a button and bleap it because there is no delay the games are Live accept for Saturday Arvo footy. Anyway how about he keeps quiet otherwise don’t blame the broadcaster which helps pay for his overpriced salary. Clearly he should think before he opens his mouth this is the reason why most people outside AFL believe the plays are just over payed buffheads.

  2. Brendon you know games are broadcast Live these days.Fox Footy does every game Live each week. You even visit the AFL 360 desk occasionally lift your game don’t blame the footy channels

  3. I don’t think Goddard has anything to answer for. It was said on the footy field and anyone who’s played the game knows that sort of language is pretty common. In my view, the broadcaster has to accept responsibility if they are going to have microphones on the umpires. That’s the risk they take.

  4. Gee Goddard’s made an interesting choice – picking a fight with a broadcaster, and on something he’s demonstrated he doesn’t understand. Next time he drops a sitter or misses a set shot I reckon there might be an extra replay or two coming his way.

  5. Goddard shouldn’t have to apologise for his language, he’s playing a contact sport. You hear worse being on public transport with it packed with school kids on their way home anyway.

  6. Didn’t see the incident as no longer watch Essendon matches due to the drug situation.

Its tv rights that puts money into the game that pays his salary. Maybe he shouldn’t bite the hand that feeds him and think before he speaks.

  7. You’ve got two-metre blokes playing a contact sport. There’s going to be a bit of biff and a bit of mouth. A couple of choice words said in the heat of the moment was not an issue until they started putting microphones everywhere. I blame the f’ing cricket…
