Seven in The Chase for new game show

Seven is casting for a local version of The Chase -possibly to replace Million Dollar Minute.

Multiple sources tell TV Tonight Seven has renewed its interest in a local version of UK game show The Chase.

In 2014 a call went out for Australians based in London to appear on an Aussie version with contestants competing against their very daunting brains trust. But Seven subsequently decided not to proceed.

Now it is understood to be back on the table, casting for a new version here, and there are even suggestions it could replace Million Dollar Minute.

Despite some inroads with $MDM it has not managed to knock Hot Seat from its game-show perch, which in turn impacts on Seven News.

The UK series, which has been airing since 2009, sees contestants try to build cash by outwitting general knowledge questions against a ‘brains trust’ such as Mark Labbett. It has been airing on Seven on weekday afternoons.

Could Million Dollar Minute‘s millionaire champ Andrew Skarbek feature as its resident brains trust….?

  1. What about a remake of Press your Luck or Jeopardy!? I know these shows work well in the States but havent had a Aussie version in quite a while and both are entertaining and both have a format that are different then what we see currently on Aussie TV. Both shows in there time had great hosts eg Tony Barber for Jeopardy and Ian Turpie on Press your Luck.

  2. I’m tipping if this does go ahead it will air 5-6pm pushing Million Dollar Minute and Deal Or No Deal out. I’m hoping that’s not the case though as I love MDM, but it’s giving away a lot of money with simply mediocre ratings.

  3. Please don’t do a local version of The Chase keep the British Version it is great and keep Million Dollar Minute I watch both every day – If you do a local version please don’t have Andrew O Keefe as host he will make it unwatchable I Can’t stand him

  4. Good move by seven if the reports are accurate. Red Symons would absolutely be a good choice as a Chaser.

Could KAK be a potential big-name host?

  5. could channel 7 be anymore desperate. they obviously don’t have faith in their shows. Keep MDM and dont replace it with a local version of The Chase.

  6. Interesting, I didn’t expect them to look at other options for MDM so soon seemed like they were still refining the show to make it better all the time….don’t get home in time for any of them.

  7. Must admit I have caught myself watching The Chase quite often so it wouldn’t be a bad $MDM replacement. I still carry a torch of hope to see a local version of The Cube though.

  8. I am a big fan of the UK version. I wouldn’t mind a local version. But this needs to be one hour long episodes. Not cut it down to 30 minutes.

  9. Excellent to hear that Channel Seven is considering to launch an Australian-version of The Chase. Hopefully it would be based on the UK version and not the US version.

  10. I love the chase and would love to be involved. A local version would be awesome but i wouldn’t do it at the expense of MDM. That show is still great.

  11. I would love to see a local version of The Chase, as long as they stick with the UK format.
It’ll be hard press to find Australian Brains Trust as I like all four on the UK version.
MDM is a good format too, but not a strong lead in for the 6pm news, and it’s showing.

  12. Would love to see a local version, but you need Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett! Seven would save money to as more often then not, the contestants leave empty handed in the UK version.

  13. I hope not, I love MDM and would hate to see it go. I don’t know why quiz lovers continue to watch Hot Seat, there are only a maximum of 15 questions per episode for the home viewer to have a go at, and it so painfully slow.

  14. Horrible show. The brains trust are such tossers that it ruins it for me. Better they try for an Aussie version of Eggheads, that way Seven could use all the big winners of MDM.

  15. I would definitely watch this. The UK version is great. But they would need to keep a firm hand on the format when casting: it needs a warm and funny host, some grumpy but tongue in cheek Chasers.
Red Symons springs immediately to mind – remember how surprised we all were when he almost blitzed Who Want To Be A Millionaire?

  16. I suggested this some time ago, love the chase but the local UK questions can be a little annoying. MDM is good but the final round is slow and only has 5 questions. This show builds towards the end. I can see people rushing home from work to catch the end of this, perfect for the news lead in.

  17. Great news. Seven needs to model their version on the UK format, though, not the US format. The US format has one less contestant per episode, and fills that spare time with inane chatter and explanations of how the Chaser arrived at each answer. If Seven wants this to work, the format needs to be tight, with The Chaser only commenting upon the action when they have something interesting and/or witty to say. Now all we need is an Australian version of the BBC’s Pointless, and we’re set.
