Sonia Manzano, who played Maria on Sesame Street, is retiring after 44 years with the series.
Manzano first appeared on he pioneering children’s show in 1971, and became a series regular in 1974, She grew up before viewers’ eyes, going on dates and later marrying Luis (Emilio Delgado), running the Fix-It Shop, and having a daughter, Gabi (Desiree Casado).
Along with acting on the show, Manzano also served as a writer, winning 15 Emmy Awards.
While the show has yet to make an official announcement Manzano has reassured fans on Twitter that all will still be well for Big Bird and the gang after she has gone.

I remember Maria from my younger days. It’s amazing that she had such a long dunno the show but it’s sad that it’s coming to an end.
No. Maria was and still is my favourite human on Sesame Street. I love her. It’ll be sad to see her go. David Knox whens her last day.
Don’t know. Not really following it that closely, sorry.
I believe that will make her just the second person to retire from Sesame Street.
I knew this day would come, but I am devastated about this. I will more than likely be crying when Susan and Bob go as they have been there since the start. Maria was my favourite human on Sesame Street. Plus she was a great singer.
