UK actress Shirley Stelfox, best known for Emmerdale and Keeping Up Appearances, has died aged 74.
She died following a short illness on Monday.
In a statement, her agent said she had been diagnosed with cancer.
Stelfox played Edna Birch on Emmerdale for the last 15 years.
ITV executive producer, John Whiston paid tribute, saying: “The family here at Emmerdale are deeply saddened by Shirley’s passing, it is hard to imagine Emmerdale without her.
“We offer our condolences to Shirley’s family and share our feeling of loss with the millions of viewers who will miss Edna enormously.”
She was the first Rose in Keeping Up Appearances and also starred in The Bill, Coronation Street and Crossroads.

Just realised for the first time that Edna from Emmerdale and Rose No.1 from Keeping Up Appearances were the same person. Mind blown.
I first saw her in Personal Services, with Julie Walters playing a ‘madam’. She was a riot. Her ‘Rose’ was such a different approach in Keeping up Appearances, but she still worked a treat. Great face.
