No Saturday Night Crack Up for ABC’s Mental As week

It's a trickled down Mental As week this year, with just 3 premiere titles.

It’s Mental As week on ABC next week.

But this year ABC is giving less ‘event’ status to Mental Health Week with one locally produced title, Man Up with Gus Worland on ABC, and 2 international premieres on ABC2.

Variety show the Saturday Night Crack Up, which was hosted by Eddie Perfect, is not being staged this year.

In recent years ABC Director of Television Richard Finlayson has spoken about events serving as “big, national conversations.”

An ABC spokesperson told TV Tonight, Mental As in 2014 and 2015 were their biggest ever cross-platform programming.

“We were pleased to kick-start this important national discussion and this year we aim to continue the conversation with a raft of activities including the screening of the three-part ABC documentary series Man Up, that takes a look at Aussie male suicide, plus on ABC2 we are screening Mental As…2, a week of ‘youth’ mental health focused programming.

“ABC Radio will also present a diverse cross-section of mental health topics and discussion.”

Premiere titles:
The Not So Secret Life of the Manic Depressive: 10 Years On

Sunday 9 October 8:30pm ABC2

Professor Green: Suicide And Me

Monday October 10 9:30pm ABC2

Man Up
Tuesday 11 October 8.30pm ABC

  1. That is a shame, really enjoyed it. We need more TV like that in Australia, a local late night show would be good here once again. I just do not get the humour on the American late night shows.
Also, ‘Man up’ is hosted by Gus Worland not Gus World.

  2. The Government cuts the budget, and at some point viewers have to notice the difference. Most viewers don’t care about transcription cuts; nor the reduction in wire services; and probably not about a once-a-year programming focus either.
