Nathan Bazley ends 10 year run as Behind the News host

Long-running host to step down from Australia's third-longest running TV programme.

ABC ME host Nathan Bazley will wrap as presenter of Behind the News after a decade in the role, but continue as Series Producer.

Launched in 1968, BTN is the third longest-running program on Australian television, behind Four Corners and Play School and Bazley is its longest-serving host after joining in 2007. Previous hosts have included Richard Morecroft and Paul Higgins.

As well as remaining behind the scenes Bazley will mentor its young reporters.

ABC Director, News Gaven Morris said: “For the past decade Nathan has been a trusted and influential figure in the lives of millions of Australian children. He has played a pivotal role in the Behind the News team, inspiring young people to develop an interest in news and current affairs.”

His final episode airs at 10am tomorrow on ABC ME.

A new host will be named in the new year.

  1. When I was a kid in primary school in 1971 the controversial Springboks rugby tour of Australia was happening. I remember watching BTN in class and they completely ignored it, despite the fact it was receiving saturation coverage everywhere else. The Vietnam War was also completely ignored by BTN.

The thing I remember about BTN is that they thought they were in some kind of bubble with exclusive access to kids when, in fact, we were watching and listening to the other media and receiving real news, not what some children’s director thought we should see.

  2. How can it be considered “third longest running program” when it was axed in 2004? It ended, then it restarted in 2005 so it’s only twelve years old.
