Sunrise wins first day against Today with Georgie Gardner

It would have been sweet news if Today had beaten Sunrise on day #1.

Georgie Gardner’s first episode of Today 2018 would have been sweet news if it had beaten Sunrise, but it was not to be.

On Monday Today pulled 256,000 metro viewers while Sunrise had 281,000.

Adding in regional viewers the gap widened to 378,000 for Nine but 480,000 for Seven.

Today did win in the two biggest markets with 79,000 viewers in Sydney with 66,000 for Sunrise. In Melbourne Nine narrowly won with 66,000 over 63,000.

No doubt it’s early days for the new-look Today team, which will presumably enjoy a victory sometime soon.

  1. I think it’s time time for Carl to go. He peaked on here a while back. Breakfast tv should have new talent every few years. Carl doesn’t have the command of the show anymore. He’s all about antics and laughter, which were fun for a few years, but now it’s just old. He loves to talk about his life, which at first was fun, but again, it’s gotten old. Georgie should do well, she knows the ropes, but I feel she has diminished her role by claiming that she knows how to handle Carl, etc, etc. She left because she was clearly uncomfortable at times, back in the day, you could see it. I say, bring it some new talent of color, accross the board to sit with Georgie, and have the show reinvent it’s image again, based on those personalities. Of course, it won’t happen, just like it didn’t with Matt Lauer, until NBC were forced to.

  2. Viewers aren’t going to flick the channel after one day.
Georgie is the best replace, met Today could have asked for but her offsider is divisive.
As for Sunrise, you couldn’t pay me enough to sit through that. The hosts are nauseating.

  3. As someone from Perth I’ll explain something. Today feels a lot more Sydney centric than Sunrise which i feel explains the edge on Sunrise in Sydney numbers. Not sure what it is but Sunrise just feels like a more nationwide inclusive broadcast.

      1. Nine have tried extremely hard in Melbourne, especially the past couple of years. Localising promos, more live-crosses with Melbourne talent, Melbourne based shows / productions. And look, it’s paid off big time.

Nine’s main channel lost Melbourne by just 0.1% in 2017. News is No. 1 there, Ninja and The Block are huge, as is cricket and other shows like ACA and Hamish and Andy + long-time AFL shows.

To say Nine are still ‘Sydney centric’ (much like it’s said Seven are Melbourne centric) would just be wrong. You cant show blatant bias.

  4. If Nine think Georgie has the same pulling power as Lisa Wilkinson, I have a feeling they’re going to be disappointed.

The Project’s ratings come Lisa time will certainly be interesting, especially as Ten’s key reality shows return.

  5. Ho hum – reveals just how tired this show is. Same sort of news reports every day [house fire, stabbing, panda falls over] and the weather reports are a joke. They simply read out what’s on the screen rarely adding any more info ie – “Brisbane Sunny 27” [look at map to see a sun icon and 27]… etc, except on the common occurance where they say a different temp to what’s on the screen – then our day is thrown into chaos! They need to freshen up more than the hosts.
