Returning: Great British Railway Journeys

Michael Portillo will front new episodes of favourite travel series, next week on SBS.

Michael Portillo will present a fifth season of Great British Railway Journeys next week on SBS,

With his copy of Bradshaw’s Victorian railway guidebook, he travels the length and breadth of the British Isles to see what of Bradshaw’s World remains. These episodes aired in the UK in 2014.

Portillo has been filming a season of his train documentaries in Australia, which will screen on SBS.

Episode One: Manchester To Birkenhead Thursday, 29 March at 7:30pm
Michael finds out how the world’s first industrialised city also gave birth to a revolutionary political movement and how railway workers began one of the most successful football clubs in the world.

Episode Two: Southport To Leyland (Friday, 30 March at 7.30pm)
Michael discovers Victorian entrepreneurship in Wigan, traces the beginnings of the industrial revolution in Bolton and drives a hundred year old commercial vehicle in Leyland.

Episode Three: Preston To Rochdale (Friday, 30 March at 8.05pm)
Michael celebrates Victorian trade with the Preston Guild then heads to Rochdale, where he discovers a pioneering movement to improve the lot of working families.

  1. Great news. They skipped a few older seasons recently in their repeats.
    Still think stopping three times a week on Thursday and a double Friday is a bit much!
