The TV Week Logie Awards held their first event at The Star, Gold Coast.

Grant Denyer won Gold following a last minute campaign waged by Tom Gleeson, while Wentworth stole the Drama limelight with 3 wins including Most Popular & Most Outstanding Drama.

60 Minutes was inducted into the Hall of Fame and there were surprise appearances by Bert Newton & Jana Wendt.

TEN, Nine, Seven, ABC, SBS & Foxtel all scored trophies along with Stan and NITV were also winners.

Dave Hughes again set the tone in style once again taking aim at TV targets but praising the Gold Coast.

“Too expensive for Channel Seven?” he joked. “They gave all their money away to Barnaby for his baby.”

He noted the live voting had closed but suggested, “If you voted on Optus all your votes are going on SBS.”

“Lisa Wilkinson’s probably glad she left. You weren’t getting pay parity? You’re probably not getting it at The Project either.”

There were gags at the expense of Karl Stefanovic, George Calombaris and Pete Evans.

With a moment for all the Gold nominees he looked for Andrew Winter in the room. “Nice to put a face to the name.”

Denyer spoke emotionally about families watching Family Feud and how it rescued him at his darkest hour. “It gave me my mojo back… allowed me to rebuild myself,” he said fighting back tears. “Family Feud thank you so much you saved me.”

  2. Why did the Logies remove the Outstanding New Talent award in Grahame Kennedy’s name and replace it with the Most Popular New Talent in his name? With all the narrative productions on free to air, foxtel, stan etc, surely they could come up with a better list? The whole point when they set up this category a few years ago was that it celebrated outstanding new talent and having it in the legend’s name was to give it extra credence. I also noticed that the only recipient to mention TV Week all night was Duane somebody from Goggle Box. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t mentioned by any other winners.

      1. Yes, I thought you probably had; it just seemed quite pointed to me last night, especially as they wheeled out Bert with great fanfare. No disrespect to the nominees in the category, but reality stars turned soapie starlet makes a mockery of the legacy and gravitas intended when they renamed the category.

          1. He may have been a cheeky larrikin but I don’t think he’d be happy lending his name to an award for reality and soapie stars. He took his comedy and acting (films) very seriously

  3. Best part of the night hands down was Julia Morris. I truly believe they should consider letting her host the night next year. Leave Dave to do his bit and if they insist on forcing kenny on us during the show then keep going but she would be that great lynchpin throughout the night. Hopefully I’m not alone in thinking how great she would be if she wanted to do it!?

    2. Yes I agree she is brilliant, but I think she should just stick to the one segment, because hosting the whole show has been a poison challis in the past, and I’d hate to see Julia’s career suffer.

  4. Production wise: the set was awful. Having the band members see through behind the presenters podium was dumb and distracting; the endless high pitched blather from Dave Hughes was too much. A little goes a long way from him. I’d have opened with Julia Morris and that excellent routine and pushed Hughsie to the later part. Shane Jacobson again too much; either share that duty around or be sharper and funnier. The In Memorial was nicely done; and very up to date; take note Oscars. Kate did a fine job.

  5. My take on the winners. Great to see Wentworth nab 3 incl first ever for the extraordinary Pamela Rabe. Amazing that a pay tv show wins both drama categories. First ever for Hugo Weaving too. Four Corners producers giving a very respectful and humbling speech; The Living Room an emotional gathering on stage and Grant Denyer’s Gold speech most affecting. Seeing Bert always elicits emotion from me as I grew up watching him host. Seeing and hearing his frailty was sobering. They were the highlights for me.

  6. I don’t think I’ve ever watched the Logies. Thank you for this rundown, David. I really appreciated reading some of the comments made by the winners. I found it very moving, and wished I’d watched it, after all, now.

  7. Thanks for the info as it happened David,, I am interested in who wins but you would have to hog tie me and prop my eyes open with matchsticks and sit me in front of the tv to ever get me to actually watch the logies….not that I missed much judging by the comments on here !

  9. There have been some highlights tonight, but in general the production was dreadful. And it is not the fault of the venue or the Gold Coast, the blame lies entirely with the broadcaster, who have dine a terrible job. Surely it’s time to hand the Logies over to another network ?

  15. I watch every year and normally quite enjoy it. But, this is truly one of the worst Logies in years – it’s been painful to watch. So much of the night has just seemed awkward and under rehearsed.

  18. This is such an embarrassing show. From Hughesy’s flub about Don Burke to Bert Newton’s homophobic comment to the awkward banter in general. It feels even more cringeworthy than usual.

    4. I’m gay and thought Bert’s “old poof” comment was funny. Bert is far from homophobic. He was sending himself up, it wasn’t a homophobic slur at all in that context.

  24. With the tone of the Logies tonight I think Tom Gleeson should have been doing the opener and not Dave Hughes. He was OK but it really could been better.

        Yes Tony should’ve prepared a longer voiceover for that bit, lol.

      2. I’m actually enjoying Tony Martin’s voice overs. Having more LOL’s with him than the awkward banter between the presenters. Just the right amount of sending it up

        1. I’m finding him extremely irritating and, to be honest, unprofessional. I know he’s working to a brief, but making comments like “Holy Crap!” (or whatever he said about Jessica Marais’ win – it definitely included “crap”) is really unnecessary.
