Kerri-Anne Kennerley visits Indigenous communities in Alice Springs

KAK hears issues around domestic abuse first hand, as she visits Indigenous communities with Hugh Riminton.

Following on from the headline-grabbing debate between Studio 10‘s Kerri-Anne Kennerley and Yumi Stynes around Indigenous domestic abuse, KAK has visited Alice Springs to hear first hand the issues for herself.

She is joined by 10 News National Affairs Editor Hugh Riminton.

In an exclusive report on tonight’s 10 News First that will feature interviews with members of the Tangentyere Women’s Family Safety Group, Kerri-Anne will grasp how these communities operate and experience the support facilities available to Indigenous women of all ages.

Kerri-Anne and Hugh will also meet with a former president of Hoppy’s Town Camp, Sherleen Campbell who has extended an invitation for them to visit the camp’s residents.

On Tuesday’s Studio 10, Kerri-Anne will also present an extended look at her experiences. She will be joined by Alice Springs’ Councillor Jacinta Price to revisit the much debated conversation with the added insight of the stories she has uncovered.

8:30am Tuesday on Studio 10.

  1. It’s good that KAK has done this, but it still doesn’t excuse her comparing Indigenous domestic violence issues with the “change the date” protests, or the colonisation of Australia. Two totally separate issues, and possibly the first time I’ve seen KAK make such a gaff.

    1. She was merely trying to make the point ‘Why worry about a date on the calendar when there are far more important issues facing Indigenous Australians? ‘. Simple as that. It can be argued though that her wording was a bit clumsy but the point she was trying to make is intact.

      1. She said that none of the “change the date” protesters had ever been to an Indigenous community to help sort out issues of violence etc. She wouldn’t have a clue where those protesters had been and what they had done, nothing more than misinformed assumptions. Having said that, the woman is currently grieving her beloved husband, so I will leave it at that.

  2. Full credit to KAK for going ahead with this especially given all she has been through recently. No doubt it will bring her exchange with Yumi back into attention. Shows that she has a real strength of character and what she said about always honouring her commitments is true.

  3. “Kerri-Anne will grasp how these communities operate and experience the support facilities available to Indigenous women of all ages…”

Oof, she really got a rap over the knuckles for those comments didn’t she? Love how that’s worded.
