Jimmy Smits gets new US drama

Smits to star as a Memphis lawyer who takes on David-and-Goliath cases with his daughter in Bluff City Law.

NBC has ordered a new legal drama, Bluff City Law, starring Jimmy Smits.

Bluff City Law is a character-driven legal drama that follows the lawyers of an elite Memphis law firm that specialises in the most controversial landmark civil rights cases. Led by legendary lawyer Elijah Strait (Smits) and his brilliant daughter, Sydney Keller (Caitlin McGee), they take on the toughest David-and-Goliath cases while navigating their complicated relationship.

After barely speaking to her father for years, Sydney is suddenly thrust back into the family fold when her philanthropist mother passes away unexpectedly. In the wake of her loss, hoping to reconnect with the daughter he loves, Elijah asks Sydney to rejoin his firm.

It also stars Scott Shepherd, Barry Sloane, Michael Luwoye, MaameYaa Boafo, Stony Blyden and Jayne Atkinson.

Dean Georgaris (The Brave) serves as writer and executive producer. No Australian network has yet been announced.

  1. Sounds like a good premise. I don’t watch any legal dramas at the moment and have been a fan of Jimmy’s since LA Law. Hoping Hulu is still around and it appears on there like the other NBC shows I watch (except for The Blacklist for some reason).

  2. Sounds very generically cookie cutterish, but I suppose that’s to be expected from a major US network show-always enjoyed his work on ‘NYPD Blue’.
