The 62nd Grammy Awards has opened with a tribute to basketballer Kobe Bryant who died tragically today in a helicopter crash.
Bryant, 41, and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, were amongst nine people killed earlier today when a helicopter crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, California, sources and officials said.
The music awards are being held at Staples Center, where Bryant has played many matches.
Host Alicia Keys opened the show with a heartfelt tribute.
“We’re literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built,” she said. She urged the audience to hold Bryant and the other victims of the crash in their hearts and performed “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” acapella with Boyz II Men, ending by saying “We love you, Kobe.”
Bryant’s basketball jerseys hung over the seats.
