Renewed: Lost in Space confirms final season

Third and final season of family adventure is due in 2021.

Lost in Space has been renewed for a third and final season by Netflix (so soon?).

The news comes less than three months since the launch of Season 2. Series showrunner Zack Estrin has also signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce new shows.

“We are so thrilled to share more adventures of The Robinson Family and see their journey through to what is sure to be an epic finale,” said Ted Biaselli, director of original series at Netflix. “We’re especially thankful to Zack Estrin, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Kevin Burns and Jon Jashni for helming Lost in Space, which has brought viewers a premium action-packed and visually spectacular series that the whole family can enjoy together, and we can’t wait for our family audiences to see where season 3 will lead!”

“From the beginning, we’ve always viewed this particular story of The Robinsons as a trilogy,” showrunner Zack Estrin said. “A three part epic family adventure with a clear beginning, middle and end. It’s also worth noting that, with what these characters go through just trying to survive each episode — if anyone deserves to catch their breath before their next mission — it’s Will, Penny, Judy, Maureen, John, Don West, Dr. Smith… and The Robot. And, of course, Debbie the Chicken. So while this chapter of Lost In Space is coming to a rousing conclusion, I’m excited about continuing to explore new stories with my friends at Netflix, and for all of the incredible possibilities that lie ahead.”

Lost in Space stars Toby Stephens, Molly Parker, Maxwell Jenkins, Mina Sundwall, Taylor Russell, Ignacio Serricchio, and Parker Posey.

The series is a reboot of the classic 1960’s sci-fi which ran for 83 episodes.

Series 3 is expected in 2021.

  1. As much as I’m disappointed at 3 seasons it is refreshing to have American shows with a proper beginning, middle and end, though having said that if Lost in Space was a hit like Stranger Things it would have carried on.
To my mind the budget and time necessary to make this show finalized the decision, it would have been tough on the actors too, especially Toby Stephens who probably likes meatier parts, also Toby looked in danger of becoming second fiddle and not lead actor just like Guy Williams, the original John Robinson.

    1. Agree 3 seasons seems too short, but it obviously has a big budget, so it’s good to know the story line will complete in season 3 and not be left open like so many sci-fi shows have in the past.

  2. It’s interesting to me how similar each of the two reboot seasons have been to the original in terms of content, so I’m hoping season 3 is similar to the original too with the exception being they make it to Alpha Centauri this time.

Like the original season 2, the reboot spent a lot of time going nowhere in a location sense, which I found disappointing. In the original season 3 there was lots of new planets and locations explored, which I loved, so i’m hoping the reboot will deliver something similar to finish with.

    1. Judy’s biological dad looks like he will be making an appearance, so the Robinson families past could be a strong thread for the finale plot.
If so, Dr. Smith and the Robot could become the incidental ‘danger, danger’ escapism as the family sort out their emotional needs. Hopefully we will also get some extra episodes this Christmas.

      1. You could be right. Personally i’m hoping the escapism comes more so from outside the colony, i.e. new worlds/ aliens etc as it did in the original, but undoubtedly Dr Smith and the Robot will get their share of the limelight…

        1. Did we see her body? I don’t think we did, but it’s a little since I watched it. I felt her ‘demise’, was left a bit open. I suspect she’ll be back, but we’ll have to wait and see.
