Report: Foxtel, Stan chasing new MGM deal.

Foxtel is reportedly pursuing an output deal with Metro Goldwyn Mayer, which is currently in place with Stan.

Stan’s deal currently includes programs such as Fargo, The Handmaid’s Tale, Get Shorty, Clarice, Perpetual Grace Ltd., Condor, Teen Wolf, The L Word, Will & Grace in  MGM’s massive film library includes the James Bond & Hobbit franchises, When Harry Met SallyThe Silence of the LambsWest Side Story, Four Weddings and a Funeral, RockyRoboCopThe Pink Panther and more.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports MGM was one of the first Hollywood studios to sign agreements with Stan before its 2015 launch but the deal will expire mid-year.

Foxtel has a deal with MGM for some films, but reportedly wants more for streaming service Binge.

Stan has enjoyed deals with MGM, NBCU, Showtime, Starz, Disney and Paramount Pictures, but Showtime is headed to Paramount+, Disney titles have gone and it’s unclear how long a Paramount Pictures deal is in place.

Stan and Foxtel declined to comment.

  1. Interesting comments, I think Stan do need to up their game with content if Foxtel are poaching for Binge and their subscriber service.
With Stan invested in an embryonic sports service it will need to consolidate its business intention for the future.

  2. I fear for Stan in this case because if they lose the MGM output they will have minimal original/exclusive content remaining with the majority of their deals being non-exclusive and their remaining exclusive deals likely ending (Showtime and Paramount both likely going to Paramount+). Granted I’d be glad to pay one less subscription a month if original content was more concentrated between a few big OTT SVODs, but it will be sad to see one of the pioneers in Aussie OTT SVOD be forced out.

Too many streaming services in Australia now, if people are locked in to a couple Netflix and Prime, they can not really afford a whole lot of services, with the time available to view. That is if people are working.

That’s why I just cancelled my Stan subscription which I got to watch It’s A Sin. Not enough hours in the day. I kept Disney+ because I watch Grey’s Anatomy and Love, Victor every Friday and Netflix because I’m quite enjoying their service and also slowly getting through Heartbreak High.
