Amanda Burton returns to Silent Witness

17 years after her departure Amanda Burton returns for Silent Witness' 25th Anniversary.

Amanda Burton is returning to Silent Witness, reprising her role of pathologist Sam Ryan as part of the show’s 25th anniversary.

17 years after her departure she joins fellow cast members Emilia Fox (Nikki Alexander), David Caves (Jack Hodgson) and Genesis Lynea (Simone Tyler) for six new episodes.

She first appeared in the role in 1996, starring in 54 episodes before leaving in 2004, when her character returned home to Northern Ireland to be with her family.

“I am so excited to be returning to Silent Witness and stepping back into Sam Ryan’s shoes – with a difference! Audiences can look forward to plenty of twists and turns as they discover what Sam’s been doing since leaving the Lyell.”

Emilia Fox says: “It is such a delight and thrill to be working with Amanda. To have Sam Ryan back again at the heart of the show is the greatest way of all to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Silent Witness.”

Lawrence Till, Executive Producer, BBC Studios Production, says: “I am delighted that Amanda agreed to return to Silent Witness for its Silver Anniversary. Silent Witness has a large and loyal audience and remains as popular as it has ever been with audiences regularly consolidating at over six million viewers. It is fantastic to have Sam Ryan at the centre of the series again alongside our other Lyell characters for a monumental story told in six parts.”

Silent Witness screens in Australia on BBC First and ABC.

  1. Minor Spoilers!

After the trauma of S23’s end, this is a great salve. I started regularly watching SW with Leo as head honcho, but I’ve caught up on *I think* all of the Sam episodes (thanks Ch. 9). I see that S24 has just finished broadcast in the UK, would be great — I know deep down it would never happen — if BBCF/ABC fasttracked S24 so that we could get back onto an even keel with the series especially if it returns to its regular January broadcast. But like I said, it’ll likely never happen cos us FTA-only plebs can’t have 2 series in a year of anything.

That said, I’m excited to see this in maybe 18mo time. The question is with regard to S25, is it the usual 10-episode format and reduce it to 6, or are they going to make a one-off single-case limited series? I did see a trailer for an episode elsewhere and actually said “Oh she’s not dead yet!” In reference to Sian Phillips, who crops up in what looked like an episode set in an old folks’ home.

  2. oooh looking forward to this. They always showed Sam Ryan having the latest European BMW or Audi car.

What I’d really like is for Tom Ward to reprise his role as Dr. Harry Cunningham. His exit was so sudden and there’s always UST between him and Nikki.
