US suspends Whoopi Goldberg from The View

Whoopi Goldberg suspended for 2 weeks for "wrong and hurtful comments."

Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended from US talk show The View for two weeks following remarks that the Holocaust was “not about race.”

Goldberg’s suspension was announced in a statement released by ABC News public relations.

Goldberg’s remarks emerged during a conversation in which the co-hosts discussed a Tennessee school board’s ban of “Maus,” a non-fiction graphic novel about cartoonist Art Spiegelman’s father’s experience surviving the Holocaust.

“Let’s be truthful about it because [the] Holocaust isn’t about race,” Goldberg claimed. “It’s not about race. It’s about man’s inhumanity to man.”

But she immediately came under fire.

“The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systemic annihilation of the Jewish people — who they deemed to be an inferior race,” wrote Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League. “They dehumanized them and used their racist propaganda to justify slaughtering 6 million Jews. Holocaust distortion is dangerous.”

Goldberg later apologised on air.

“So yesterday on our show, I misspoke.” she said. “I said that the Holocaust wasn’t about race and it was instead about man’s inhumanity to man. But it is indeed about race, because Hitler and the Nazis considered the Jews to be an inferior race. Now, words matter and mine are no exception. I regret my comments as I said and I stand corrected. I also stand with the Jewish people, as they know, and as you all know because I’ve always done that.”

The View has not screened on Australian television after being dropped by Nine in 2013.

Goldberg has an upcoming role in Star Trek: Picard on Amazon Prime.

  1. Listening to the full clip like that gives important context. Not as bad as the short clip suggests. Are people suggesting that this is some kind of evidence that she is some kind of holocaust denier? Ridiculous

  2. If she was a white or conservative she would be instantly cancelled, she back tracked her comments only when the backlash started. So a two week vacation until the upoar blows over and some good PR, meanwhile Roasane got her entire show stolen from her. Hypocritical

    1. Prior to the revival, Roseanne had been involved in lots of controversies as a result of her use of Twitter. Roseanne’s situation wasn’t a one time thing, she had been warned.

  3. I really hope it’s only two weeks. As someone who is a grandchild of Holocaust survivors, I believe she just said the wrong things in the heat of the moment. She apologised and is happy to be educated. Sadly in the USA & around the world, people don’t understand Jewish History. The best way is more talking. However a “cancel culture” has been created by progressives in the states and it’s starting to hit their own. Conservatives do it as well. Examples include Roseanne, Sharon Osborne, Housewives/Vanderpump rules stars. Sadly more of this will happen in Australia.

I came across a Holocaust Denier many years ago at work – instead of going straight to my boss to get the person fired, I educated him with our story. He did his own research and apologised to me the next day. I believe education is the way forward – otherwise, we will be more divided.
