“It’s been an absolute privilege”: Jane Doyle retires from Seven News Adelaide

Seven News Adelaide presenter to retire after 33 years with the network -and a 22 year winning streak.

Seven News Adelaide presenter Jane Doyle has announced her retirement today after 33 years with the network.

For 22 years Doyle has presented the highest rating 6pm news program ratings in Adelaide.

“It’s been an absolute privilege for the past 33 years to be invited into your homes and lives to share the day’s news,” she told viewers.

“I wanted you to know, I’ve decided to sign off at the end of this year to pursue some other ambitions.

“Having spent more than half of my life here at the news desk, that hasn’t been any easy decision to make. It’s like moving out of home for the first time, really. It’s terrifying and exciting all at once. But, for me, I’m sure it’s the right decision.

“I’ll miss so much about being part of Seven News. It’s been a life changing experience and one for which I can never adequately thank you or my colleagues.”

Jane Doyle has fronted 7NEWS Adelaide since 1989. Some of her most memorable news stories, include the downfall of Barry Moyse, the shocking homegrown terror attack at the NCA, and the world headline-making Snowtown murders, plus royal visits from Prince Charles and Princess Diana, to hosting a dinner for Prince Edward to welcoming Queen Elizabeth II at Adelaide Airport. Presenting 7NEWS from the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 was also a personal highlight.

She started her career as a newspaper cadet in 1980 before moving into radio and then into television news in 1988 with ABC South Australia, where she presented the weekday news bulletin.

In addition to her 7NEWS role, from 2005 until 2012 Jane worked as part of Adelaide’s FIVEaa. In 2009, she was named Australia’s Best AM Newsreader at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards in Sydney.

In 2022 Jane was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for her contribution to broadcast media and the community.

In a statement she said, “I’ve always been humbled to be invited into South Australian homes – and now onto their various devices – for more than three decades. I’m also delighted to have met so many interesting people from all walks of life across those years and admire the tenacity, expertise, humour, and goodwill of people all over our fabulous state.

“I’ve also been privileged to work within the Seven ‘family’ both here in Adelaide and across the network with an extraordinarily talented and committed bunch of colleagues. There are so many people who have to all do their jobs well to ensure a news bulletin gets to air on a television platform people have faith in and trust. It’s been a terrific experience and one for which I can never adequately thank the audience and my colleagues,” she said.

“However, the word ‘retire’ doesn’t feature in the plans I have for the next phase of my life. Some long service leave travel will kick off 2023 but my work on the Board of State Opera SA, support for the Adelaide Festival, State Theatre Company and various other arts organisations and my commitment to community groups and charities will continue. Then there’s my new passion for watercolour painting, more time for gardening and cooking and the novel I’ve always promised to write.”

Seven Network Director of News and Public Affairs, Craig McPherson said: “Jane has been the foundation of 7NEWS’ success in South Australia for over three decades.

“Jane’s professionalism and poise, combined with her searching attention to detail in the news she presented, made her and 7NEWS the 6pm appointment of choice in the state she so loves.

“Jane has left a lasting legacy in our Adelaide room and on behalf of Network News and Public Affairs I want to thank her for all she’s done for us across a stellar career most could only envy,” he said.

Director, 7NEWS Adelaide, Chris Salter said: “Jane is the ultimate professional. Her honesty, integrity, dependability and experience have set the benchmark for news broadcasters across Australia.

“For decades she has been invited into our homes and trusted to keep us informed about our neighbourhoods, our state, our country and our world.

“She will be missed in the Adelaide newsroom just as she will be in households across South Australia. I thank Jane for her incredible service. She will always be part of the 7NEWS family,” he said.

Her last bulletin will be on Thursday, 15 December at 6.00pm. Seven is yet to announce a replacement.

  1. Lovely lady, and reading a teleprompter well for 33 years is an achievement in the world of news *readers*, but let’s not get too carried away when these “celebrities” retire, their contribution to the world is often very over stated.

  2. I no longer live in Adelaide but as a teenager I remember my parents watching 7 News with my brother and I in tow. I cannot believe it was 30+ years ago. Happy retirement. Sounds like Jane will still be quite active in the community. I wish her well.

  3. A longtime stalker of this website, I must say I’m thrilled to finally make an account to wish Jane a happy retirement. As much as one knew this decision would have to come eventually, I still can’t quite believe it. All the best Jane!
